Scam Call Scare Tactics

We got home half an hour ago to find a message on the answerphone saying (along the lines) that our internet was being used for fraud and if we didn't answer the call and press "1" we risked being arrested.

The number - 02031290664 - is presumably spoofed but I have never known these people to leave answerphone messages before, they usually disconnect when the machine cuts in.

I really wish something unpleasant would happen to these people

I've once or twice pressed 1 and asked them if their parents brought them up to be dishonest, but it struck me as a costly/bad idea potentially.

My other half was quite upset when we heard the recording. She was upset that these calls could target more vulnerable people such as the proverbial "little old lady"

The scammers are robot dialing saying my phone provider is going to cut off phone & broadband and I should speak to there service desk.

Unfortunately there are some vulnerable people out there who don't just put the phone down.

Security over spoofed caller ID on the public phone networks of the world is atrocious.

You'd expect telcos to fix it but I imaging they make a fair amount of money from scam callers.  Does anyone else even use a landline any more?

I can’t wait for the day I can give people universal, disposable, text based “numbers” to contact me, that are not easily guessable in the way geographic phone numbers are.

Who called is good for this. It seems the number isn't spoofed.

If you look on "Who Called Me"  https://who-called.co.uk/Number/02031290664 - this number has been reported numerous times. Feel free to add your own entry.

MikeSP beat me to it.

As somebody said, apparently not a spoofed number. Just dialled it(after first blocking it on my mobile). For something better to do I dialled it several times and wasted about ten minutes of THEIR time and hopefully got them a bit wound up.

In reply to MrsBuggins:

I was bored the a couple of days and got one those calls that started with, "Hello Mr Billhook, this is BT we have detected  a virus in your computer and we need to remove it to protect your data......blah, blah etc.,"

Great fun.  I pretended to carry out some of his instructions, gave him silly answers to others and I could sense his frustration with my 'mistakes', and delight that I was hooked and attempting to follow his instructions.  I made him work a bit harder by telling at one stage that the website I'd opened was a porn one and so on.  I think I even asked him if he knew of any more!.  In the end he asked for my IP address to which I told him he should know it if they've contacted me and asked him if he could answer one of my security questions such as my mum's maiden name.  To which he replied rather brusquely; "Thanks for wasting my time and; Goodbye" where upon he put the phone down.

I felt so much better!

I work on the basis that if I can swear at them and waste some of their time then that's less time for them to con somebody more vulnerable or gullible

I think if any of them ask for my name I'll answer with my nom d'UKC

My father had the fraud threat scam on Saturday, he was so shaken up that he couldn't go out that day. I contacted the police and gave them the details but I don't suppose they can do much. He is fairly wise to most of the usual scams but this one was more professional than the usual call from Mumbai.

I get them on my phone from time to time but in nowhere near the volume that Dad gets, they obviously target the over 80s which puts them in the same category as intestinal parasites in my book.

My elderley relative who is otherwise very clued up has a torrid time with these calls, not because she doesnt know they are fake but because she believes that the call means her entire online and fiscal life has been compromised because they already know her phone number. For this reason aloe i would gladly transmit telephonic syphilis to them if such a thing was possible

I suspect they realise he's elderly and potentially vulnerable so his phone number worth more to them than yours. They're scum but not daft.

I've reported this call to the local police neighbourhood watch system and they're going to publicise it.

Interestingly calls to the said number are met with (in a pseudo American accent) "The number you have called is not in service".

Suggests they know they've been rumbled - on that number at least!
