So I am after recommendations for a triathlon. Want to do one that is hilly with off road running. Harder the better

The Celtman then. Too late to enter for this year though. https://cxtri.com

Croydon Ocean Olympic Tri in North Devon http://croydeocean.co.uk/

It’s billed as stunningly savage, which is very, very accurate and has been cited as the 5th toughest short course in the world -

I could imagine the Croydon triathlon being pretty tough too...

another vote for slateman.  I've only volunteered rather than raced but it's an absolutely stunning event.  It involves cycling up Pen y pass.  If you do the sprint distance it involves cycling up Pen y pass, turning at the Pen Y Gwryd and coming back up the other way.  The run is in Padarn country park and Dinorwig slate quarry (but the sprint doesn't go into the quarry).

The company behind it (Always Aim High) also do a sandman in Anglesea and a snowman which involves a run up Moel Siabod.

Coniston Old Man: fun and low-key and the route is spectacular (Wrynose and Hardknott, and run the Wetherlam-Coniston skyline). It seems to have vanished for 2018.

Wensleydale: glorious swim, even better (and tougher) bike route, the run is up and down a big gentle mountain.

Both of these were small, friendly and well-organised last time I did them (5ish years ago?), and I'm still tempted if family commitments ever relent.

Any race is hard if you go fast enough
