Vertebrate Publishing has just launched a Kickstarter project for an exciting new narrative called Never Leave the Dog Behind, by award-winning author and poet Helen Mort.

The book is inspired by the story of Missy, a German Shepherd who was abandoned by two hikers in the Canadian Rockies, and explores the relationship between people, dogs and the great outdoors. The book comprises interviews with dog owners and experiences with a variety of dogs as well as Helen's own observations as a runner and pet owner herself.

The idea behind the project is to offer dog lovers the opportunity to have a photo of them and their dog (pet dogs or working dogs) printed in the book. Vertebrate is specifically after photos that capture you and your dog enjoying time together exploring our hills and mountains.

With each pledge you receive a signed copy of the book, your name printed in the acknowledgements and a Never Leave the Dog Behind tote bag.

Plus, if you pledge £150 (which will be donated to Mountain Rescue England and Wales) Vertebrate is offering a training exercise with a search and rescue dog. You'll get the opportunity to be a dogsbody and observe how mountain rescue dogs work and indicate the location of those in need to their handlers.

If you love dogs and you'd like to be part of a book that celebrates the joy of heading to the hills with your four-legged friend, check out the Kickstarter page.
