New DVD, just released, from the producer of Stone Money
Alun Hughes, has re-released some of his archive material
in this single shot of 80's nostalgia. Starting last year with
the release of Stone Monkey on DVD, Alun has put together
several short films onto a double DVD of some of his best
film moments from the 80's.
DVD 1
To kick off we have Jimmy Jewel in Total Control. 35 minutes of
Extreme solo climbing in North Wales.
Secondly is 12 minutes of Shaun Baker in Waterfall Kayak.
Several International Film Festivals have adorned this film with
prizes. "This film makes climbers look like wimps!" Jerry Moffat.
The Fourteen Peaks with Colin Donnelly follows Colin during
his 1988 attempt to break the record for the Welsh 3,000ft peaks.
12 minutes.
Swallow Falls, the first descent... by Canadian Canoe! 5 minutes
long, but then again, how long can it take to throw yourself off a
waterfall?
DVD 2
On DVD 2 things start off back on the climbing scene:
Gogarth is 25 minutes following Johnny Dawes, and Paul
Pritchard on such classics as Hardback Thesaurus - the first
British E7 onsight (or is that ground-up?) first ascent. Some first
ascents, and some tasty falls from some of Gogarth's best known
routes.
Strone Ulladale again joins Johnny Dawes, and Paul Pritchard,
but this time they are joined by Bob Drury, and Crispin Waddy,
for 30 minutes of new routing in the Hebrides.
Buoux 8c. 25 minutes. History was made! Agincourt - The world's
first 8c - Ben Moon waving the flag for British climbing! Also
includes Johnny Dawes, and the original strong-man Jerry Moffat
on fine form.
The first 8a in the UK, was on Welsh soil. Statement of Youth,
was a groundbreaking climb when Ben Moon first topped out at
Lower Pen Trwyn. 5 minutes of the man himself, doing his thing!
Another first, Liquid Amber was the first 8c in the UK, and was,
yet again, just down the road (aren't we great?!). 5 more LPT
devoted minutes, with Jerry Moffat showing what he's made of.
To close, we have an absolute classic. Hubble, was first climbed
by Ben Moon, and it was the world's first 8c+. A short, sharp route
at Raven Tor, with extremely hard climbing. Ben Moon on absolute
top form. 5 minutes.
This double DVD set will throw you straight back to the halycon
days of lycra, bad hair styles, and Fire's. Make sure you've got your
sunglasses on!
The best bit is being able to get hold of Total Control again!

In reply to JonC: Bought this last weekend and brought back many memories as originally saw these videos on the big screen in the Heights. The best bits are the kayaking down Llanberis waterfall and the 14 peaks record. Totally awesome !
