Many years ago my father bought us a rope and a book of knots, and we set about learning mountaineering from first principles on the dank lonley choss-heaps of Connemara. The results were mixed; e.g. a triumph was our invention of an ingenious device for extracting jammed nuts (basically, a butter knife with a sling attached for carrying - it looked uncannily like the 'nut keys' we later found for sale in metropolitan 'climbing shops'). I'm sure we'd have got to cams eventually.

I'm bit of a weed, but I manage to compensate surprisingly often by finding epic adventure in modest projects, e.g. by choosing long routes, in the rain, hung-over, with dangerous partners, racing against nightfall, etc. By now I think I've achieved a modicum of mountaineering competence, at least until it starts snowing.

I'm quite keen to meet more climbing partners - especially anyone interested in collaborating on crag-side child-minding.

Several candidates - none especially heroic, but even so, all too epic to describe in the space here. (It's the long ones that you remember, right?)
