One of the things we want to do in the new Rockfax Slate guide is to add full first names to the first ascents. We have managed a lot but there is a very diverse history of climbers who have been active on the Slate and we haven't yet got any where near getting all the names.
Below is a list of names with initials where we aren't sure of the first name of the climber. They are grouped in areas around the quarry where they have relevant FAs. They are also listed in places with the full name of the climber they were with. I will make a second post with the names in alphabetical order.
Any help much appreciated. Apologies for the length of the posts.

Just a guess, but would D. Kirton not be Dave?
Also, what happened to the new routes book in Pete's Eats? surely that would be worth looking at for this info?
Edit: M. Paine could be Marcus (although the spelling would be Payne)
I can help with some of these, I've just sent you an email with my phone number....
Andy Woodward (Machine in the Ghost, I presume) -- one of the Woodward brothers.
Thanks Andy
> Also, what happened to the new routes book in Pete's Eats? surely that would be worth looking at for this info?
Mark Reeves has just nipped down to Pete's and says there is no New Routes book there any more!
I'm afraid that is what happened to paper new routes books although it would be a great shame if that historical document from the 1980s is lost.
Alan
Yes it would, and hope it has been stashed somewhere (accessible). IMO opinion tonsured monks should be transcribing stuff like this onto vellum, which will last a lot longer than an online archive <ducks>
Leon Zablocki, I think
> Mark Reeves has just nipped down to Pete's and says there is no New Routes book there any more!

Phil Kelly has them, I think.
> Phil Kelly has them, I think.
Yes, I think it was going into his rockarchivist site, but that seems to have gone AWOL
Been pointed at this thread. I don't physically have the NRBs; I borrowed and scanned them (it was a mammoth job!) for the RockArchivist site, but TBH no-one seemed to be that bothered, so I canned the idea. I still have the scanned images, so no matter where the paper versions ended up, I have a safe copy.
There was one book in the collection that I didn't scan; just never got round to it.
Phil
That's a shame. I thought it was well received. I certainly found it interesting. Generation thing, maybe?
Probably is Jon, yes
Now Lynn is BMC President things might change. Worst case we will take a copy of the scans in case something happens to you.
Was that the site from a few years back that had the scans from Peak/Outside NRB? I wasted a good few hours going through that.
Surely this is the kind of thing the BMC should be curating?
> Now Lynn is BMC President things might change. Worst case we will take a copy of the scans in case something happens to you.
It's not that simple, Steve. Happy to discuss when the time is right.
Yes it was. Glad you wasted plenty of time on it!
Let's not lose track of this original thread tho which is about the historical record of the Slate quarries.
Phil
P Jiggins is Paul.
L Lovatt is Len.
N Sharpe is Nick.
Yes, that was Matthew Podd who was living in Bethesda around ‘87
M Handford, my guess is Mark Hanford, owner of Snowdonia Adventures
Malcolm Boater
Matt podd
Len lovatt
Nick Biven
Wynn Rees
Phil Warsop
Great days were had!
Yes, now in Otley and fell running
J.Lyon - Jim. combined age of 150? with Joe for new routes and still climbing at 83.
Owain Jones for the Rainbow area one.
Ian Stevens - Ianto
L and d dutton are the same guy. Danny . C Stephenson is Clive who is now sadly no longer with us
Bus stop - Paul Doyle and Ben Smith.
D Lee and J Warburton listed under Twll Mawr are Duncan Lee and John Warburton (FA of Teenage Kicks, E4).
Also Duncan informs me that the route "Yorkshire VD" on Seamstress, given an FA in 2010, was actually done by him and Gary Thornhill in about 1987 - details went in the Petes Eats FA book at the time, but obviously lost in the mists of history. The name they gave the route was "Jim Symon 11 Frobisher Close" for reasons far too obscure to go into here....

Excellent. Thanks for that. Would love more of those if they are around.
Alan
J. Martin (Dali's Hole) is 'Jonny' Martin
Just been on logbooks, thanks Alan.
In the GIDEON section E. Penman is definitely Eric (Spider) Penman. I talked to him about it (the 1st ascent of what might have been the first route of any note on Snowdonia slate?) recently when a guy contacted me for info on Spider's whereabouts as he is researching a book on the history of slate climbing. I put him in touch with Spider and he promised to let me know when the book came out, but I haven't heard from him.
A Whittall is probably Alan Whittall, sadly deceased.
