In reply to MargieB:

Rock Climbing - Mastering Basic Skills by Craig Luebben is a pretty clear guide, although it's written with American climbing lingo.

In reply to MargieB: "The Handbook of Climbing" by Allen Fyffe and Iain Peter. It's been around for years and I still recommend it. However, I don't know how it competes with todays offerings or whether it has been updated recently.

In reply to MargieB: Libby Peters book is good as is trad climbing+

http://libbypeterclimbing.co.uk/sales.html - best to check that despite the pics being the 1st edn that she sends the 2nd

In reply to MargieB: Don't know about best, but I've got a selection of instructional books for sale, mostly unused, including the 1st edition Libby Peters for sale - http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=524107

More seriously it is well worth having a look at the Rockfax Climbing+ books. They have specific ones on Sport, Trad and Winter - http://www.rockfax.com/climbing-guides/books/?view_type=grid

In reply to MargieB: Climbing Anchors by John Long. While it focusses, as per title, on placing protection and building belays, it does this very thoroughly and has some entertaining anecdotes. Very clear and very readable.

9 out of 10 climbers make the same mistakes.

A different kind of instruction as it doesn't mention anything about rope work...But if their goal is to climb better it might be suitable.

In reply to MargieB: Another vote for Libby Peter's book (see also new BMC DVD).

In reply to MargieB:
Depending on the level of experience, 'Go Climb' covers all the basics. Uses big clear photo's and comes with a dvd that covers each chapter.

Lets Go Climbing by Colin Kirkus

In reply to needvert:

"9 out of 10 Climbers Make The Same Mistakes" is not a beginners book in the slightest if you ask me. It's great if you want to push your grade, but a beginner doesn't want to do that. A beginner should just learn to be safe.

I'd recommend Trad Climbing +, it's a brilliant overview IMO, and while some of the techniques aren't the most efficient, it teaches you to be safe.
