Looking for the best beginner's rock climbing Instruction book for Xmas present. Has anyone got any recommendations? Thanks

Rock Climbing - Mastering Basic Skills by Craig Luebben is a pretty clear guide, although it's written with American climbing lingo.

In reply to MargieB: "The Handbook of Climbing" by Allen Fyffe and Iain Peter. It's been around for years and I still recommend it. However, I don't know how it competes with todays offerings or whether it has been updated recently.

In reply to MargieB: Climbing Anchors by John Long. While it focusses, as per title, on placing protection and building belays, it does this very thoroughly and has some entertaining anecdotes. Very clear and very readable.

A different kind of instruction as it doesn't mention anything about rope work...But if their goal is to climb better it might be suitable.

Depending on the level of experience, 'Go Climb' covers all the basics. Uses big clear photo's and comes with a dvd that covers each chapter.

"9 out of 10 Climbers Make The Same Mistakes" is not a beginners book in the slightest if you ask me. It's great if you want to push your grade, but a beginner doesn't want to do that. A beginner should just learn to be safe.

I'd recommend Trad Climbing +, it's a brilliant overview IMO, and while some of the techniques aren't the most efficient, it teaches you to be safe.
