Good morning UKC'rs

Think you know your English and Welsh crags and fancy a Xmas "Name the Crag" Quiz? Best viewed in 4K here's a wee aerial vid featuring some English and Welsh crags as viewed from the eye in the sky. Most of the crags are well known so I suspect you may recognise many, but a few would be classed as esoteric just to make it a bit more tricksome! Due to Covid and travel restrictions for the best part of a year there is <hint> a bit of a South West bias...

If you want to rise to the challenge, there are 17 individual clips relating to 17 crags so see how many you can identify from this unique perspective. I'll put out a list of the answers in a few days and the first to get closest or all 17 wins a virtual pat on the back from me!

Merry Xmas and good luck!

A fine effort Nigel and you have 11 out of 17! All will be revealed next week...  Cheers Dave

In reply to Macca_7:

OK, thanks. I wondered if the climbers were on Matchless, but frustratingly the video only showed the top of the climb.

Ha ha oh dear! When the UK gets back to some sense of normality you ought to venture South of the border a bit more... Cheers Dave

In reply to Guy:

> 2 Sandymouth?

Yes, I think 2 is the Flame at Sandymouth.

3. Is familiar but still struggling to place it...

8. Pressure Drop at Speke's Mill

15. Bamford?

In reply to BALD EAGLE:

Great idea for a quiz!

The view of Sharpnose is stunning.  When you are there you are aware that those fins are pretty thin but from this angle they just look impossible.

You are making me nostalgic for the SW.  It's been far too long since I climbed in North Devon - my favourite crags and such great times...

You may have a point! Though most of  these seem to be south of Bristol

 Mark Kemball 19 Dec 2020
In reply to Dave Garnett:

2 isn't Sandymouth and 8 isn't Speke's. I'm struggling with 15.

 HappyTrundler 19 Dec 2020
In reply to BALD EAGLE:

8 looks like Dyer's Lookout ?

 Dave Garnett 19 Dec 2020
In reply to Mark Kemball:

Back to the drawing board.  I was pretty confident about Pressure Drop, cropped as the view is!

No!

 HappyTrundler 20 Dec 2020
In reply to Mark Kemball:

Just looked again, I meant 5 for Dyers Lookout, that one fin looks much too high for Sharpnose ?!...

 HappyTrundler 20 Dec 2020
In reply to Mark Kemball:

It is Sharpnose, the satellite dishes give it away, plus you can see the line of Lunakhod....

 Jezadee 20 Dec 2020
In reply to BALD EAGLE:

Great video.

Like Nigel Coe but

I think 2 is called the Horn

8 - Screda Point

9 = looks interesting l but haven't a clue

10 = The Arete on Morning Slab, Avon

15 - looks like Bamford to me

The Pylon King 20 Dec 2020
In reply to BALD EAGLE:

10. Brean Fort

 Michael Hood 20 Dec 2020
In reply to Jezadee:

15 - agree with Bamford, just an unusual viewpoint that makes it tricky - the road gives it away (if you've driven along it enough times 😁)

The SW ones (of which I could recognise very few) showed me how parochial I am.

To Bald Eagle: - another nice little movie - thanks.

It was the weird crozzley rock of gargoyle flake that gave it away for me.

In reply to PaulJepson:

agreed...  I like the way David’s angle makes GF slip into the rest the crag, as opposed to the classic angle with the arete and Ladybower

Many thanks for all the kind feedback and I'm delighted you have enjoyed the quiz and my wee video. Between you all you are getting very close to a full house!

If anyone wants to try for an additional 3 extra "Anorak" bonus points, see if you can name the 3 routes with the climbers on Clip's 6, 8 and 11... Cheers Dave

good excuse to watch it again

8 is tourist trap & we know 11.

but 6, the shame, I have never been to Lundy... 2021 goals

Yeah I got that one. I lived at Weston when in the 6th form.

 Kevster 21 Dec 2020
In reply to Jezadee:

I'd say numer 6- its horsemans route as the belay is on the easy ground to the side - so climber must be doing the traverse. However diamond solitaire (the corner crack if I've got confused with double diamond) can go through that point dependant on the variation you choose.

 Guy 21 Dec 2020
In reply to Kevster:

Think the climber is on double diamond.

Edit: there is also a team on i think Flying buttress.

Well done chaps and collectvely you have identified all 3 routes so have a socially distanced virtual pat on the back from me! And JerDon I hope we can all get to Lundy in 2021 as it is a truly magical place to visit! The climbings none to shabby either... Cheers Dave
