On Monday I attempted to download a topo from Coronn.com. The download did not work, and today when I started up my machine the antivirus software told me that it had detected a virus (it's my work machine, so this is not a problem). I can't think of anything else that I have tried to download in the last two days.

No I think your initial guess may well have be correct. The Snoopy cartoon was just a jpeg, unlikely if not impossible that the virus could be carried by a single jpeg.
