As my last pair of sunglasses have broken, I need to get some more before the summer arrives and I go off to Greenland. Unfortunately I can never find any I like that suit me and I can afford. Ideally I want wrap around ones that don't let any light in so I can use them on a glacier, but I've never been able to find any that fit me snugly enough (I have quite a narrow face). I would rather avoid the traditional glacier glasses with side bits on as I do want to wear them in public as well as just on a glacier....

Any suggestions for where to look would be very much appreciated. I can't afford to spend a fortune either so bear that in mind!

In reply to Ali:

Try looking at childrens ones. I have a fairly small head and have a pair of Julbo kids wraparounds that didn't cost a lot and are great.

In reply to Ali: ditto the kids ones - I've got a wee head and got a pair of bloc wrap around jobs which have been fine on a couple of trips to the alps and several scottish winters (mainly for stopping snow getting in my eyes rather than blocking out the sun!).

In reply to TN: Hmmmm, thats an idea....can you get them from normal outdoors shops or do you have to look somewhere more specialist to get them with high UV rating?

In reply to Ali:

I got mine from Hitch n Hike - I guess other outdoor shops must sell them too...

In reply to Ali: Been on your exped site. Looks like it's going to be a good trip.

You've got to let Matt change his photo though! It's a shocker.

In reply to Davey G: Lol! He looks like the invisable man or something We thought it would be better than the last one though....we didn't think a picture of him face down with a bottle of whisky would help attract sponsorship...

In reply to Ali: Head for Keswick - I'd be amazed if you can't find a pair that suit you in the gear emporia. Also check out www.vision3k.com (very helpful with e-mailed enquiries) and www.gosportsspex.co.uk. to find some you might like to try. Get a Category 3 or 4 lens (not 4 if you want to use them for driving) but watch out for the UV rating as cheap non-UV absorbing sunglasses allow your pupils to open wide which lets all the UV in (worse than not wearing them ata all) and could seriously damage your eyes - you can't afford not to look after them! Enjoy Greenland!

I have a pair of Cebe ones which I got at the outdoors show at the NEC last year. They cost me £30, have detachable side bits so you can choose to avoid light coming in the sides or look normal, depending on what theyre being used for, also have a decent case, and they did the job fine in the alps last summer. I can bring them on sunday if you want a look and remind me.

second from the bottom on there. If you get Cebe ones they need to be with a 2000 lens. Other manufacturers all use their own codes for lens strenght it seems unfortunately.

I do have a quite big head tho so they might not fit you, some models come in different sizes i think.

ah... so you can go for the sunny day out walking look, or the Roy Orbison look...

cool
OP Ali 31 Mar 2005
In reply to Si dH: They might be similar to the last pair I had (which I managed to break) which I didn't like at all (they seemed flimsy, didn't suit me and the detachable side bits annoyed me) but got cos a) they were cheap and b) i needed some asap.
 Si dH 31 Mar 2005
In reply to Ali:
Theyre not flimsy, seem pretty well-made as sunglasses go. I like the side bits coz it means I can choose whether to have them there or not, but I guess if you've disliked them before they're probably a bad idea.
OP Ali 31 Mar 2005
In reply to Si dH: They're probably a bit different to mine - mine you could bend the arms of the glasses far too easily for my liking...i was surprised they lasted as long as they did but I didn't particularly like wearing them so avoided wearing them as much as possible!

In reply to Ali: Check out your local Boots, they've got a couple of ranges there including some good one in the £15-20 range. As long as theyre cat 3 (or uvf 400) rated you should be ok.

In reply to Ali:

Have you tried Bloc? Mine work ok and my face is quite narrow. I got them from the YHA shop but don't know if they are still doing them now they've changed hands.

p.s. Very jealous of your trip! Can I come too?
OP Ali 01 Apr 2005
In reply to magic: I'll try there...have looked in a few outdoors shops with no real luck (or motivation to be honest...) but should probably start making an effort!

I'll put you down on the reserves list....its rather long though i'm afraid :oP
