I am going to spend the next weekend in Snowdonia. I would like to know if there are any easy bolted routes (or easily top-roped) in Snowdonia or Wales. Thank you very much.

P.S. - sorry for my ignorance but how do I translate the grade of sport routs to UIAA? Is F7a a 7a in the french grading?

Then where, Sutty? thanks.

as for bolted routes there are some in the slate quarries of llanberis but most require a trad rack to be carried as well.

i think there is some bolted stuff on the north coast not sure where though.

the slate routes could be top roped i think though i have never tried it myself.

enjoy (just dont get your bolt gun out down the pass you could get lynched)

In reply to lmvt: In North Wales there are some excellent low grade sports routes in castle inn quarry near colwyn bay, and some mid grade to hard routes on the orme. These are all in the north wales limestone rockfax guide. there are more in the new clwyd rock rockfax too.

I'd avoid the routes in Penmembach quarry though, they're a pile of choss.

In reply to lmvt: you could top rope in the slate quarry if you want a knackerd rope after! and most of the bolted routes on slate requiers nervs of steel as there are huge runouts and sometimes a long way to the first bolt off the ground .

your best bet is the limestone , like the castle inn quarry and pen trwyn.

How easy do you want? Do you want sport-climbing or convenience-climbing?

In reply to lmvt: A few at Llandulas, good for half a day?

In reply to lmvt: most of the sports climbing in north wales is in clwyd in the area around Llangollen check out the new rockfax guide (www.rockfax.com) or www.sportsclimbs.co.uk (this also covers South Wales).

Not much in Snowdonia at all, but clwyd is only 30 mins away iby car, or yoy will pass through on your way north is coming from London/ the South.

of course you could buy a set of rocks to go with your quick draws and so broaden your mind

I know that but I have never learnt how to use them and it is not good to do it by myself

In reply to lmvt: how do you sport climb on your own?

In reply to lmvt:

Want me to come down and show you how to use nuts?
 GrahamD 25 Aug 2005
In reply to sutty:

What, real drilled out wheel nuts ?

In reply to lmvt:

Grades ? There are plenty of crags you can top rope (try a search on these forums - its an oft asked question) but very few, if any, conventionally bolted routes actually in Snowdonia.

In reply to lmvt: there's a nice bolted roof at gogarth...
