Last month Jean-Christophe Lafaille disappeared, presumed dead, on Makalu in the Himalayas. Several obituaries have appear in the UK press including this one from The Independent - http://news.independent.co.uk/people/obituaries/article344195.ece

Jim Gilbert has kindly translated the obituary published in Le Monde for UKC.

In reply to Alan James - UKC: 'The Wife' doesn't come across all too well in that one...

In reply to Anonymous: Jim thanks for translating that. My feeling is the obituary writer probably listened to local french alpinists a little too much for the "behind the scenes info" on his or his wife's motivations. For those interested I'd recommend searching out the short film JC (it was featured at kendal 2?? years ago) and his wife made of their time on Annapurna during his last successful visit there - very touching and showed how close they were.

In reply to Ian Parnell:

I would recommend people read the excellent article / interview with Lafaille in Alpinist - Winter 05. Quite precient in content and worth the cost of the magazine alone

In reply to Ian Parnell:

No probs, he was one of my heroes, and will still be an inspiration to me - it's people like him and their exploits that really got me interested in mountaineering as opposed to climbing.

I agree about the writer of the obit - I expect he was just trying to get some kind of angle on it. BTW, I wouldn't recommend analysing my translation too closely - I've tried to keep it as close as possible to the original, but inevitably some bits won't be perfect.

Must get round to watching Cold Haul, as well as the one you mentioned!
