i have an idea for an indoor bouldering training aid. i want to set up a camera filming the bouldering wall and then playing back on a screen with a 5 minute delay (or whatever works better). so the idea is that you try a problem climb it/cock it up, whatever then you can go and look on the screen and see what you did, thus helping positive reinforcement, visualization and seeing where you're cocking it up.

however there are a few problems

1. i have no idea how to do this

2. according to my local wall(Creation climbing, B'ham) apparently tou can't just go around making recordings of people because of the child protection laws so none of the information could be kept outside if the 5minute loop (anybody know anytjing about child protection laws able to shed any light on what you can and can't actually do would be usefull)

3. price. need to do it as cheeply as possible

any suggestions about how to do this or even where to start finding information about it would be gratefully appreciated

what is the significance of a 5 minute delay? you will have the image recorded so just play it back whenever you want.

easiest way to do it is rig a digital camcorder up to a portable TV and play it back on the TV. however you may miss lots of small but important performance indicators doing it this way

i use specialist software (Kandle "swinger pro")on my laptop that will play back the image but also allows on the spot biomechanical and time motion analysis to provide feedback but it costs around £3000.

cheers

Just get your mate to record you on a camera phone and email it to you. Have a look at your body position and see how you could improve it : try to climb the problem in the improved way next time.

I have done this a couple of times for routes and it is quite helpful as you never actually get to see yourself climb from a 3rd person perspective.

In reply to djw: there is no specific significance to 5 minutes but the idea of the delay is to have the feed running permanantley at a public wall so that no user interface is required. also as i mentioned no permanent recording is allowed.

In reply to Burnsie: you are not allowed to make recordings in the centre without the express written permission of the centre. sorry if i didn't make it clear in my original post but the idea is for a permanent traing aid at the center

Hello, I'm a sports child protection type person by trade, so have some of a clue here.

I'm afraid that if the wall are, sensibly, trying to stay above board with respect to CP rules, there's a fair bit to consider.

You'll need parental consent,in advance, for the filming, which lays down exactly how the film will be used. This SHOULD NOT be a generic footnote to wall entrance (eg, clause 128: I agree that you might film my kids), but a specific consent form for the filming underway.

You would need to make sure that those overseeing the filming and with access to the film (ie anyone with the keys to storage units etc) are CRB checked for suitability (question; does anyone at the wall know, in proper detail, about the CRB system? Who is going to vet the checks that come back?)

You should make sure that the film is deleted/destroyed when no longer relevant. In this case, that might be after the 5 minute viewing, so maybe you could rig up a digital system that only stores the footage for 5 minutes. That would actually go a long way to minimise the risk here.

All of these things are not legally required as such, but you could get in trouble for not following this 'best practice' if anyone takes offence, of if it turns out that one of the guys at the wall has been taking home the footage of that 14 year old girl with the nice arse and tight shorts (believe me, you NEVER know).

Hope that helps.
Feel free to email me through this site.
Mark.

In reply to amanonaspeedingbike: cheers mike, this is more or less what the wall have told me. they have said if i can find a way of doing it and not storing the information outside of the delay then it should be ok.

however my technicall knowledge is limited, a suggestion has been made to make a virtual drive out of memory, then all information would be deleted when the computer is turned off. i have been told this however would still be keeping the data for to long.... i'm really quite stuck

Hi TOm.p

We had to introduce the photo policy at Creation due to the fact that we were getting complaints from parents about other customers photographing their kids.

The likelihood of the pictures been used for anything other than promotion or simply to cherish their kids moment climbing to the top of the wall is slim to remote, but we have to cover ourselves for all eventualities.

We DO allow photography and video recording, however we ask you to fill in a photo identification form and provide ID so that if anything were to happen with the images we can pass the details on to the relevant authority.

If you have any other concerns regarding this matter then please come and find me/or Tim and we will happily explain the situation in further detail.

In reply to Mike Kerby: hello mike, i have allready spoken to tim and tom about this. to be honest i'm trying to see how plausable the idea is technically before taking it any further and seeing as i can't find any cheap and easy way of doing it, its probably just a pipe dream.
