Make your request we'll not refuse you,
We are there just to amuse you,

'They just make YOU worse'

'I know I'll see your face again'

Written about Ashcroft's father who died when he was only very young.

Interestingly though on the very earliest demo's Ashcroft sings 'They just make ME worse' so perhaps there is some ambiguity.

Ashcroft's intake of narcotics was legendary, the NME dubbed him 'Mad Richard' whilst Noel Gallagher called The Verve a bunch of Space Cadets led by Captain Rock.

Listen to 'Cast no shadow' (one of the better Oasis track) which is Noel's tribute to Ashcroft. 'Bound with all the weight of all the words he'd like to say'

Damn, got to hand it to those Ovaltinies (but I can't say I remember the song as vividly as you seem to, if at all...) but Perfect Day might just knock them off their no.1 pedestal on my list one of the few songs that could bring tears to my eyes - and the weirdest choice for a mass public sing-along (Lou Reed that is, not the Ovaltinies!).

To tell the truth I dunno, I've just got an old cassette with this song on and it says it's sung by Janis Joplin... might well be a mistake though, the voice doesn't sound quite like her... anyway "Needle of Death" is my favorite, I just put the other one on as it's a bit iconic according to an USian friend who is old enough to remember She says it was their anthem at the time... I was less concerned by pills and stuff.

Despite the fact that the Chili Peppers have refused to lay down even though they've now been crap for far longer than they were ever good, Blood Sugar sex Magik is a awesome album, and under the bridge is a fantastic drug song, albeit totally devalued the 15 years of wank that followed, and a couple of dodgy covers.

Yeah, by JJ Cale, and Clapton covered it, less effectively.

> has Lucy in The Sky with diamonds cropped up yet 9in spite of Beatles' protestations to the contrary)?

I used to know Julian Lennon pretty well when I was a teenager. He insisted that that track came from some childhood thing where John Lennon was holding him up and pointing at the sky, calling the moon 'Lucy' and the stars 'diamonds'. I dunno if it's true, and I suspect not, but that was his version.

In reply to Al Evans: Lee Perry's version of Long Bread Colly although any one of thousands of tracks from the '70s roots reggae scene could take the crown. But never mind a song, wot about a whole album Spacemen 3, Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To.
 winhill 19 Feb 2007
In reply to Al Evans:

I stuck Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds in my top tracks, but the story I heard was it was named after a picture by Julian Lennon and the LSD was just coincedence but it very obviously was describing a trip.

I put it in cause it describes a trip rather than just singing the praises.
 Greenbanks 19 Feb 2007
In reply to Steve Parker:

Though the Wiki(etc) version has it thus "As a child, Lennon directly inspired the title of one of his father's most famous songs, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", a description he gave to describe a picture he had drawn, a watercolour painting of a girl (a classmate named Lucy) surrounded by stars"

I suspect we'll never know.
 Steve Parker 19 Feb 2007
In reply to Greenbanks:

I imagine Julian Lennon was so young at the time that he doesn't really know what was going on. That was his version, but it's probably not very reliable.

I remember hearing that it was a picture drawn by a child, possibly one of the Beatles' children, and when asked what it was she said it was "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" and the song came from there. Before reading that I thought it was to do with Professor Leakey's "Lucy", but this may have been because he had been my headmaster and left a very strong impression on me.

he was doin' fine
they were standin' in line
it was excellent weed indeed
when he came across a young man
who was likewise peddelin' pot
and the devil slid down the beach to the kid
and said "boy lemme tell you what"
i guess you kinda figured i'm a reefer head of course
and after all this time
i guess that i'm
a connoisseur of sorts
now your stuff smells ok
but this could tranquilize a horse
i'll bet a million in cash
against your stash
coz i think mine's better than yours
the boy said "my name's johnny and you ain't smoked nothin' yet"
one hit of this grass
will kick your ass
you got yourself a bet
johnny roll a ball of hash
and make sure it's the bomb
coz the devil's got the kind of stuff they smoked in vietnam
you'll get a million smackaroo's
in cash if you cash if you can cook,
but if you can't devil gets your dope
(Fiddle Break)
the devil packed a bong
with a little acapulco gold
and resin flew from his fingertips
as he fired up his bowl
he filled that chamber all the way
and he took a mighty hit
as they passed it back and forth
it gave'em both a coughin' fit
when the bowl was finished johnny said
"hey man that stuff was great"
but fill your lungs with some of this
and prepare to vegetate
cannabis,apeeva,sweet mary jane
the devil's in the back yard fryin' his brain
zig zag filled with a diggity dang
hold on tight it'll hit you like a tank
the devil nodded off because he knew that he was stoned
and he asked if he could buy an ounce
of the stuff that johnny owned.
johnny said "devil just come on back if you ever wanna catch a buzz"
i done told you once you son of a bitch,
mine's the best there ever was
then they fired up doobies one by one,
ain't gonna stop 'til the bag's done
green as a bullfrog,
sticky as glue
granted you'll get high,
yes i do

Seems to be some dispute as to who wrote it though...
Weird Al Jankovich get's credited on some sites, David Allan Coe on others.

Sam Stone
©John Prine

Sam Stone came home,
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.

Chorus:
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm....

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

Repeat Chorus:

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill.

Repeat Chorus

In reply to Al Evans:

Miguel came from a small town in northern Mexico.
He came north with his brother Louis to California three years ago
They crossed at the river levee, when Louis was just sixteen
And found work together in the fields of the San Joaquin

They left their homes and family
Their father said, "My sons one thing you will learn,
for everything the north gives, it exacts a price in return."
They worked side by side in the orchards
From morning till the day was through
Doing the work the hueros wouldn't do.

Word was out some men in from Sinaloa were looking for some hands
Well, deep in Fresno county there was a deserted chicken ranch
And there in a small tin shack on the edge of a ravine
Miguel and Louis stood cooking methamphetamine

You could spend a year in the orchards
Or make half as much in one ten hour shift
Working for the men from Sinaloa
But if you slipped the hydriodic acid
Could burn right through your skin
They'd leave you spittin' up blood in the desert
If you breathed those fumes in

It was early one winter evening as Miguel stood watch outside
When the shack exploded, lighting up the valley night
Miguel carried Louis' body over his shoulder down a swale
To the creekside and there in the tall grass, Louis Rosales died
Miguel lifted Louis' body into his truck and then he drove
To where the morning sunlight fell on a eucalyptus grove
There in the dirt he dug up ten-thousand dollars. all that they'd saved
Kissed his brothers lips and placed him in his grave

that none of you has mentioned EITHER

Kashmir by the Zep

OR

Copperhead Road by Steve Earle.

If not, the whole lot of you can go and stand in the corner for the rest of the lesson.

Advertisement (Another Intentional Irrelevant Suicide)

by Roy Harper

I get up and I walk across the room
I get to the door - I've been there before
Wondering what I got up for
When all of a certain I remember
What I was going to say to you
Standing there watching my member
Hanging there squirting the loo

I'm really stoned
I'm really stoned
Permanently out my bone
I'm really stoned

I sit down on the phone I get the urge
To dump yesterday, flush it away
I hope the force is still with me
When sure enough the door flies off it's hinges
And there stands P.C. Bill Identikit
Saying "I've got trouble finding where I'm going
"Coz my backside is very badly lit
"Hello, hello, hello
"My bloody head no longer seems to fit
"Hello, hello, hello
"And you're under arrest...
...and...'ello?"

I'm really stoned
I'm really stoned
Permanently out my bone
I'm really stoned

So come on, let go
Let your feelings show
There's something inside you
The person beside you really needs to know
Come on, change your mind
You never know what you might find
Break out the rizlas
And roll up a place to unwind

Well you can bust me once
You can bust me twice
But you'd have to top me
To finally stop me from loading my dice

'Coz I'm really stoned
I'm really stoned
Permanently out my bone
I'm really stoned

Just throwing you a handy tip...
In reply to Al Evans:

Is that songs about drugs or songs to listen to during recreational use

For the latter, IMO:

- Anything by Early Pink Floyd, notably stuff thats on Live in Pompei

- Bowie
- Zappa
- Led Zep
- Roy Harper
- The Who
- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
- Later stuff from the Beatles

Not in that particular order either.. Can you guess I was a hippy child and took influence from my parents collection?

In reply to Al Evans:

If we can give the lyrics, try this one, hard not to feel, your eyes get moist if it reminds you of anyone:

"NEEDLE OF DEATH
Bert Jansch

When sadness fills your heart
And sorrow hides the longing to be free
When things go wrong each day
You fix your mind to `scape your misery

Your troubled young life
Had made you turn
To a needle of death

How strange, your happy words
Have ceased to bring a smile from everyone
How tears have filled the eyes
Of friends that you once had walked among

Your troubled young life
Had made you turn
To a needle of death

One grain of pure white snow
Dissolved in blood spread quickly to your brain
In peace your mind withdraws
Your death so near your soul can't feel no pain

Your troubled young life
Had made you turn
To a needle of death

Your mother stands a'cryin'
While to the earth your body's slowly cast
Your father stands in silence
Caressing every young dream of the past

Your troubled young life
Had made you turn
To a needle of death

Through ages, man's desires
To free his mind, to release his very soul
Has proved to all who live
That death itself is freedom for evermore

And your troubled young life
Will make you turn
To a needle of death"

Cop Shoot Cop by Spiritulazied - actually that whole album (music and packaging) is really very elegant, clever and wonderfully made, (though not especially practical, and opening my copy nearly broke my heart) and very telling as to the main influences of its creation.

Indelicates, "Good Heroin":

My heroine is on heroin
But not bad heroin, the good heroin
That rockstars take
And that heals the ache
Of the pain she's in
She's not dirty; she's past thirty
She plays acoustic guitar and the flute
And the harp and the theramin
On heroin
My heroine

And oh, in this dead town
The dead kids hang around
This must be Zion, they promised us Zion...

My heroine is so beautiful
Her cheeks are hollowed out, God, She's beautiful
She orders jugs of wine
And wastes all her time
At the wishing well
She's a dreamer
I'm a dreamer
We are not like the others
We're the best of our brothers
We dreamers, We dreamers
You should see us

And oh, in this dead town
The dead kids hang around
This must be Zion, they promised us Zion...

My heroine believes in something
Because something big must be happening
She carries books
That belie her looks
And the pain she's in
She sees singers
Who sing protest songs
That she already agrees with
She has afternoon teas with
Them, looks at the world
And the unthinkable wrongs

She sings, damn this dead town
Where the dead kids hang around.
Bored to tears with the infinite peace
The chosen one, like everyone
She raises her eyes
Raises her eyes
Raises her eyes and succumbs

In reply to Al Evans: "A Passage To Bangkok" by Rush:

Our first stop is in Bogota
To check Colombian fields
The natives smile and pass along
A sample of their yield
Sweet Jamaican pipe dreams
Golden Acapulco nights
Then Morocco, and the East
Fly by morning light

[Chorus:]
We're on the train to Bangkok
Aboard the Thailand Express
We'll hit the stops along the way
We only stop for the best

Wreathed in smoke in Lebanon
We burn the midnight oil
The fragrance of Afghanistan
Rewards a long day's toil
Pulling into Katmandu
Smoke rings fill the air
Perfumed by a Nepal night
The Express gets you there

[Chorus]

Weedtastic

At Bournemouth University open mic night in the SU last year there was a great song that one guy sang about his whole family being on different drugs, in went on to say his dog was on propane, even though propane isn't actually a drug.
Most amusing. espically the dog bit.
