Over 50 women participants attended the first annual women's climbing weekend April 28-29, 2007, at Joshua Tree National Park in southern California, USA. The Sterling Rope/Peak Rescue Inst. Women's Climbing Weekend, was hot in more ways than one! With temps soaring into the 90s, the warrior women p...

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com:

Godessess? Warrior Women?

Is this a kind of reverse patronising?
Stac Pollaidh 15 May 2007
In reply to brothersoulshine:
If so, it's not Mick's fault. It would be either Sonya's (who wrote the piece) or Dougald's (who edited it).

In reply to Glyn Jones:

absolutely shocking! What a terrible way to coach in movement on Rock. Surely they'd have learned much better if they were either scared sh*tless and thrown straight on lead or had to stop and remove gear every couple of moves?

Nice to see some *normal* people being featured climbing on here rather than sh*t hot E number superstars!

In reply to Glyn Jones:

Everything is done on a top rope - half of the group were beginners. Even the more advanced that were learning to lead trad were on a top rope.

My write up was indeed edited, but nevertheless, these women were warriors

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com:

Just curious about the ropework really

I'm sorry... maybe this seems sexist... I suppose I just wish I'd been there that's all

In reply to Sonya: Sorry Sonja, it was a dig at the UKC intengentia that cannot contemplate the idea that top roping can be used and is useful.

I think it is wonderful and needs to be promoted more irrespective of Al Evans's views on women only climbing events.

Keep up the good work and fingers crossed that you saw another Lyn Hill or just saw a load of people (not wanting to be gender specific) enjoying themselves.

In reply to nikinko:

Jeez, grow up.

Why don't people complain about Match of the Day always featuring sh*t hot Premiership superstars instead of 'normal' people, I wonder? It's actually quite an interesting question.

In reply to withey:

No offense taken - what part about the ropework are you curious about?

I have been organizing women's climbing events for Sterling Rope for a couple of years now - this was our first one at Joshua Tree. There are a couple more scheduled for this year: North Conway, New Hampshire, September 8-9, and New River Gorge, West Virginia, September 29-30. Happy to put you to work if you find yourself out this way!
