nikon lens and body compatibility?

hello

are all Nikon manual lenses the same fitting? I've got an old Nikon EM kicking around somewhere, and my dad's just told me he's got 9 Nikon lenses in a box, all sorts of shapes and sizes, but they're manual-fit... so I was wondering if they'd be compatible with this camera?

sorry I don't have more details to help with this one.

i dunno what there is yet, I haven't seen my dad in a while so I need to show him my canon dslr and rollo the rolleicord

I'd better not mention the Nikon digi compatibility, as my big bro has a D70...
 dek 27 Jun 2007
In reply to CJD: Big Bro gets first shout Ha Ha! I have a D70, manuals work on that, minus the metering but easily sorted! Some of the oldies are great, esp the 28mmf2.8!
 orge 27 Jun 2007
In reply to CJD:

You might even be able to mount them on your canon? I have no experience of doing this, but I'm sure I've read that (ironically) Canon's provide more functionality (i.e. the metering works) with older Nikon lenses (AI/AIS) than Nkon bodies!

There seems to be a bunch of people selling adapters on ebay as well...

In reply to dek:

nah, my big bro has a lovely camera but unfortunately no photographic eye. My twin bro uses a little compact and gets great pics, my big bro doesn't, so he doesn't get the lenses - he does get lots and lots of help and support with car-related things from my dad though, so it's all fair!
OP CJD 27 Jun 2007
In reply to orge:

ooo! this is all rather exciting!

I'll test them on the Nikon body first, I think. I just need to track it down...

 dek 27 Jun 2007
In reply to CJD: The answers easy enough then...swap cameras and have a 'system'?!
OP CJD 27 Jun 2007
In reply to dek:

nah!

that would be too organised!

and I still hang fondly on to Scabby Old Yashica, who doesn't fit into any 'system' (because no, I really can't afford Contax kit )

it was enough hassle to choose the canon in the first place! and then what would I do with the canon eos 500n and lens?

(I have just counted - is 7 cameras too many? one of them's a polaroid and one's a compact...)

Verging on the 'anorakish'! But hey if you enjoy them?

In reply to CJD:

I have been using an old Sigma Nikon F fit 16mm with my D70 and an F4 for a long time now. The lens is non-AI and so in terms of fitting is as basic as it gets. I've used it totally manually (obviously) and have had the most fun when it is stuck on the digi body. I can experiment more freely and consequently get better results. I have to use my brain more. It is more satisfying.
OP CJD 27 Jun 2007
In reply to dek:

well they've all ended up with me mostly by accident than saying 'ooo I want lots of canon bodies' or whatever
 dek 27 Jun 2007
In reply to jim robertson: I have an old 16mm too, on an D70, There is somewhere software that takes out the 'curve' might be DXO or Nikons own? Its a bloody sharp lens IMO.

It's precisely the computerised component that I enjoy being removed from my snapping. The results can be exhilerating when you have to play with things a bit to find what it is that you want. I'm not saying I want to go back to pinhole stuff, more that I like to exploit what the digi era brings, the ability to view results fast and play with things at the camera end rather than the 'puter.

In reply to jim robertson:

Aye, I have a manual 50mm f/1.8 lens for the D70 that was my main lens through last year and I ReALLY enjoyed using it, I have got a 50mm f/1.4 autofocus on there and it is good but not as much fun. Regardless of technical merit, I am more "attached" to certain pics taken with the manual

<Going off on a tangent>

Showing your kit to your Dad is loads of fun. My Dad had a canon manual SLR Which he mainly used to take pics of 1) oil rigs backlit by sunsets and 2) long exposures of my 7 year old self in the back garden with a Toymaster lightsabre.

Showed him the D40 last month:

Dad, you know how you your films had different speeds so you had to carry two bodies loaded with different films? Well if I press this button and spin this dial.... yes 1600, that's right"

...with a smug grin on my face.

<tangent ends>

Oh, and this is the photography forum, not the technical gear freaks forum. <points finger of accusation>

Can't have too many cameras as a collector. Seem to have five working cameras, three or four more point and shoot in various states of repair including the 110, two vintage cameras, and if I can get a lift to the moon have plans on bringing that Hassleblad back they left there.

Back campatability is one of the strengths of Nikon over Crapnon
OP CJD 28 Jun 2007
In reply to Henry Iddon:

hmm, that's good. The nikon i've got is a curious one in that iirc you can't adjust the shutter speed, only the aperture, but other than that it's a lovely camera that makes a nice satisfying clunky noise when you press the shutter button. I've not seen it for a while so I'm looking forward to getting it back. If these lenses are really exciting I might have a look for a body that's got a shutter control thingy as well.

In reply to John Wood:

my dad's got a minolta autofocus slr, but he's always been the family photographer - I think he's quite pleased that I now take pics too. He did manage to tell me off for being too interested in photographs at the moment and neglecting my other creative pursuits though... can't win!
 sutty 28 Jun 2007
In reply to CJD:

You can set speeds, so long as you understand EVs. It is an aperture priority camera so you need to set the lens open enough to use faster speeds.

CJD, I am only bloody jealous.
Do I get anyone gifting kit to me, not hardly.
Plus, my son nicks a Nikon D50 I won as a prize, uses it, and has now been offered a job with a top Msport agency.

OP CJD 28 Jun 2007
In reply to co1ps:

it's a really good point - as I say, I've got by absolutely fine with my basic camera and one lens for years - which isn't to say my pics are great, btw!

i just thought I'd find out if I could use these lenses with my old camera.

the *other* old camera that I've been given recently, that's uber-basic, is way more exciting. If it works.

I think, as I've repeatedly banged on about, that if you haven't got a reasonable eye for a picture, no amount of kit is going to help you.

others may disagree.

hello all

my dad's just emailed me - I'm picking up the lenses on sunday but apparently this is what's in the box.

4 various Nikkor lens adaptors

Gossen Lunarsix light meter

Nikon 90deg. eyepiece adaptor

In reply to CJD:
The 105 is a cracking portrait lens, with nice bokah for you! 35mm1.4 was very expensive, the 20mmf3.5 also a stunning W/A , you have done rather well, all those lenses can use metering on a Nikon D200
OP CJD 12 Jul 2007
In reply to dek:

how exciting!

I've also got a funny feeling that that light meter might work more easily for a bear of little brain (moi) than the westonmeter I inherited with the rolleicord - yay!
 dek 12 Jul 2007
In reply to CJD: yeah, the Lunsix was supposed to meter even by 'moonlight' not sure about the batteries though?
OP CJD 12 Jul 2007
In reply to dek:

what do you mean? they're still selling them so I presume batteries are still available. I shall find out!

Jammy sod, you could probably have bought a top of the range car for what that lot cost when new.

that mirror lens would not have seen much change from £500.
 Blue Straggler 12 Jul 2007
In reply to sutty:

Aye I am thinking she'd do well to sell the Canon 350D and save a bit of moolah (or just sell one of the snazzy lenses) and get a Nikon that's compatible with all of the above (including metering, which I know rules out a D70!), then she'd have a great all-round system with the 35mm Nikon she's also got.
OP CJD 12 Jul 2007
In reply to Blue Straggler:

er... no.

having had a quick squizz round th'internet today, it seems there's a strong discouragement of using manual lenses on digi cams.

I've just got the Canon, there's no need to change it. I like it.

how would you fit my yashica into that 'all round system'? or Rollo?
OP CJD 12 Jul 2007

p.s. you should know better than to believe I'd do what anyone on here told me to do!

 dek 12 Jul 2007

more the fact that I've got something that seems to be fine so why change it? It's like these people who arse around with lots of different rucksacks and boots and stuff. Boorrrrrring!
 dek 12 Jul 2007
In reply to CJD: No look, we are just pointing out you could have an amazing digital setup with as much lens variation in lenses as a 'pro' for the sake of a digi Nikon body, thats all! Does that seem strange? btw the EM body is quite good, just has the 'Auto exp' which you can work around.
