Are there any good non-limestone climbing areas within a few hours drive of Southampton. I feel like a bit of a change from Swanage/Portland. Somewhere with plenty of easy trad routes would be ideal.

Southern sandstone?
Southern chalk?

Quite liked Sandstone when I went there but was thinking of somewhere with some leading. Chalk somehow doesn't appeal unless someone can convince me otherwise!
In reply to alexrp: West country granite or culm might be your best bet for a 'few hours' drive...

Culm coast? Hurlstone point can't be more than a few hours from you.

Have you tried using this - http://www.ukclimbing.com/databases/crags/

That sounds promising. What is the most easterly area of granite of culm with good easy routes.

Not sure what culm is BTW?

Just looked up Hurlstone. I like the look of it. Cheers.

In reply to alexrp: Dartmoor = granite.
In reply to alexrp: Baggy is probably the best bet for accessible (in both senses of the word?) culm, though I've not been there personally so can't tell you more.

What's culm? A weird slatey feeling type of metamorphosed sandstone / shale. I believe. Weid stuff, but makes some very impressive slabby crags.

Maybe the Dewerstone for granite.

It's not my neck of the woods, so use the crags database on here.

It's a nice place imo. If you've got timme (maybe an extra hour) at some point I'd make the trip to Baggy, brilliant crag.

Stanage ain't too bad, 3.5 hours from Southampton

Thanks all. Baggy Point looks good. Quite like the look of those slabs.

Stanage 3.5 hrs away? Now that is tempting!
