Your climbing career in six words?

New Topic
This topic has been archived, and won't accept reply postings.
 Dave Garnett 05 Feb 2008
The Today programme (yes, R4) was discussing summing up your life in 6 words this morning.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/reports/misc/sixwordlife_20080205.shtml

Some of the ones posted are funny, some quite touching.

It was based on Ernest Hemingway's famous six-word story written to win a bet. He wrote: "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn." - quite brilliant.

So how would you sum up your climbing career so far, in six words?

Started strong, significant diversions, late developer!

I think it depends on the rock type. Grit is often very technique oriented (which is why I don't get on with it), while volcanic tuff (the Happys and Sads in Bishop) is mostly about powering up overhangs (which is why I like it).

Actually there is a lot of truth in that. I have always found that when I am out of training and not feeling strong and fit my technique has collapsed too i.e. I have always climbed technically better when strong and fit, I guess because one is using small holds much more confidently and in a much more relaxed manner.

I think that loses the nuances placing the focus on metal scars due to scares.

My sort of meaning was the real marks it has made to me... physically, mentally and lifestyle wise as a result of a lifetime passion ... plus also the double entendre of scars = cliffs ... plus I also thought I might get a prize for managing with 3 rather than 6

It's the way the question's framed: it's about your climbing *career*, not about how we feel about climbing in general. If I'd been asked the latter, I wouldn't have been so downbeat, and said instead something like

"massive buzz, amidst stunning natural beauty" (or maybe, "scared sh*tless, alone in damp quarry").

Yeah, I was thinking what a miserable lot of grade-obsessors people were tending to portray themselves as, but I think you may be right that it's self-deprecation. Or maybe it's sparked by the use of the word 'career' in the OP, and the associations we subconsciously make when we hear that word.
