Karen Darke was paralysed from the chest down in a climbing accident in 1993. She has gone on to find adventure throughout the globe, from hand cycling in the Himalaya to skiing across the Greenland Ice Cap.

In this UKClimbing.com article, she describes her ascent of El Capitan, partnered with well known climber Andy Kirkpatrick.

"Now he shouts “Safe.” What a crazy word to use. I could say no like I should have fourteen years ago, when I began leading a route in Scotland I knew was too hard for me, moments before the salty cliff slipped from my fingers, and I hit the rocks below. Was this first published in Alpinist? I think I've read it before. (This isn't a dig, just curious)

Yes, this article appears to be Karen's account of the ascent. Andy did a similar article on UKC in Oct 2007 http://www.ukclimbing.com/articles/page.php?id=543 Inspiring stuff - a strong lady!

Very inspiring and makes me realise how fortunate I am and hopefuly i`ll catch her lecture when she comes over to Caernarfon.

It`s very refreshing to read her article as most posts on this site is so negative with climbers bitching each other all the time.

Looking foreward to Andy`s lectures as well coz I think he`s a top guy !
