Have a look at Blackrod Train station. Has the advantage of being in the Grater Manchester so you can travel on a day ranger.

In reply to balongworth: Blackrod Trainstation is about the closest, from there its a decent walk or better still a cycle up the hill!

In reply to Jimbo MSider: Isn't Horwich Parkway station closer?

Get the train to Bolton, walk to the bus station and get on the 535 to Belmont. Ask the driver to let you off at Scout Road and walk about 1.5 miles up Scout Rd with the option of breaking your journey at the Wiltons. There is probably a bus to Barrow Bridge which would significantly shorten the walk.

In reply to balongworth: Generally for public transport info in GM area you want to go to www.gmpte.gov.uk and then into the journey planner.

The direct link to the journey planner is http://www.traveline-northwest.co.uk/JourneyPlanner.jsp?vm_Reset_str=true

You can either go to Scout Road (Wiltons) or Colliers Row Road (the road that Brownstones is above) but you'll end up with a walk at the end either way.
