Pretty much what it says in the title. They need to have an RRP of £50 or less and be suitable for outdoor sports i.e. climbing!

I've no idea where to start!

Cheers

In reply to RickyJ634: Bloc Hornet ? £20 ish

In reply to RickyJ634: bloc blade 35 quidish, very nice cat 3 lenses too.

In reply to RickyJ634:

The ones in Decathlon that are about £9. Come in a bulky box with interchangeable clear lenses that you can ignore. They don't look cool but as they don't have lower rims they are handy for climbing as you can glance down at your rack without the view being obscured by sunglasses rims. And at £9 you don't get too precious about them

In reply to RickyJ634: Cheers all! All well under budget! Bonus! The last pair met with a sticky end after coming into contact with the sole of a scarpa freney, soon to be followed by a 8m drop off Burbage South. The pair before that might still be in the toilets at Lauterbrunnen rail station...

In reply to RickyJ634: Well worth spending the money on some Oakleys. You won't regret it!
 EddInaBox 11 Jun 2010
In reply to Lamb:

Unless they get lost, broken, scratched, stolen, etc. Oakleys are a total rip off, most of what you pay is for the name.

In reply to RickyJ634:

I swear by Dirty Dogs. Great quality, great designs, great price, great name.

Their plastic designs are £40 and metal are a fiver or so more.

In reply to RickyJ634:

I've got some sunwise equinox glasses for about £30. My criteria were: cat 3, no gaps around the top or bottom for lots of light to come in, well ventilated (I get pretty sweaty), and good looks. They fit the bill really well, and come with brown and yellow lenses in a ddition tto the silvered ones which can be great for cycling too.

In reply to EddInaBox:

I disagree. I have had loads of sunglasses, Which also get used for mountain biking.

I have had 3 pairs of oakleys, 1 Arnette, 1 Rudy Project, 1 Specialised.

I still have the oakleys and rudys.

The rudys are bike specific, and you wouldn't wear them in the street.

One pair of oakleys is 15 years old, but now looks dated.

The other glasses have fallen apart due to various things.

Maybe it's looking after them, as they are over 50quid.....

The fit, on my head at least, is so much better than cheaper glasses.
Maybe they are overpriced, but the quality is better.

Pays yer money, takes yer choice.

In reply to trek: How would those lenses fare in Snowy/Glacier conditions? Good value for money from a good make, but i'm interested whther the lenses would be dark enough for use skiing/climbing.
 Andy Mountains 13 Jun 2010
In reply to drunken monkey:

Ive used mine for climbing in the UK a lot, but cant comment on glacier use. However the lenses are not that dark you are right, but if you do a search they do 4 or 5 different lenses in the same glasses, same price.
Worth a try for a few quid. You can get them on ebay, amazon etc too..
In reply to RickyJ634: I've got quite a few pairs of Bloc sunglasses which sell for under £20 each. I like them, but the lenses scratch so easily

I do sometimes wonder if one pair of £160 sunglasses is better than 8 pairs at £20, but I can't bring myself to spend that sort of money!

In reply to RickyJ634: Its probably just me, but having checked the UV protection rating type stuff, spend as little as possible. Last year, pair No1 lost in snow somewhere between Dale Head Tarn and Honister (only second time I wore them), Pair No2, left of floor with backpacking kit while loading minibus, picked up all kit except sunnies and then reversed the minibus over them, pair No3, placed on nose to protect eyes from sun while sea kayaking near home, decided to do some surfing, got turned over resigning sunglasses to bottom of the sea! No I didnt go to Specsavers!

In reply to trek: Brilliant cheers, will have a look. Great value for money

In reply to RickyJ634: Thanks again! Lots to choose from! Quite like some of the bloc glasses, although the pairs for a £5er are pretty tempting! Will sleep on it

In reply to EddInaBox: Completely disagree there. The technology difference between an Oakley lens compared to say a Bloc lens is huge. As is the rubber on the frames.
 Andy Mountains 13 Jun 2010
In reply to Lamb:

I'm sure it is. But then the quality between say a Bentley car & a Ford car is also huge, but most of us drive Fords.

How much "technology" do you need? The "technology" difference between an Oakley lens and a Revo lens is also huge (Revo being more, er "technological"). Do you want to spend 3-4x the price of a pair of Oakleys, on a pair of Revos?

That was not my point, I didn't say they weren't better (and I'm not saying they are) they may or may not scratch so easily, they may have different rubber bits, I still claim they are a rip off, the majority of what you pay is not the cost of manufacturing and retailing. It is widely held that Luxottica take a very substantial markup on Oakleys, and a serious chunk of your money goes to pay for promoting the brand, if that money went towards making the product instead think how much better they could be.

Can't beleive nobody has given Tifosi a mention? Maybe they are pants and its only me that like them. I've got the 'envy' pair. Good wrap around design, grips your face for climbing, good choice of colours, hard case, yellow, brown and clear lenses. The clears are good when on the bike in dry contions <dust>
£35.00 from my local bike shop.

In reply to RickyJ634: Have you looked in TKMaxx? That's where I bought my last two pairs of general outdoor sunnies (I have some older and moderately expensive Bollés that give lots of protection for very sunny conditions on snow etc). But in TKMaxx I found a pair of Animal glasses which were great and lasted maybe 4 or five years of regular use. And then for the last three years I've have some North Face ones, these grip very very well to your face (i.e. good for climbing) but, like the Animal ones, cost 15 quid so you're not too worried about losing them.

I'm always a bit sceptical about the RRP marked on all TKMaxx things, but the TNF ones at least were supposedly 70 quid originally. Hence 15 quid seemed pretty reasonable! I'll be checking in TKMaxx when I'm over in the UK this summer to see if they have any thing else decent in!
OP RichJ634 15 Jun 2010
In reply to RickyJ634: Cheers again. Like the look of Tifosi glasses (especially dolomites) but will check out TKmaxx first. For the minute I've found a fantastic pair of fluorescent orange sunglasses, with silver mirrored lenses. They cost £1!!! They look fantastic and will do me for a week in Scotland starting tomorrow. If you want to see them I'll probably be on In. Pin. on Thursday around midday...
