hello

I've had some weirdness with my knee recently and was asking about MRI scans and meniscus tears recently. Not sure how much of what's in this thread is of use, but perhaps some of it might be: http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=411144

good luck!

They are relativly common, most aren't to bad and a quick bit of arthroscopic prunung and it's sorted. They usually just cut away the small flappy bit that's resulted from the tear also your only in for a few hours when they do it.

Yeah, LOTS of recent experience. Daughter had two tears in knee cartilage last november. Short version of story is; because of youth (15 year old) all advice was to try to let it heal itself. After 5 months, not much progress, so arthroscopy booked. Still much pain, but that is partly because knee is weaker.
Advice from us - make sure the doc you see about it is a specialist and understands sports injuries, and the nature of the sport involved. Don't know how old you are; that does make a difference to treatment.
If you want full story, PM me, it would be a LONG post.
Most recent chapter - its mostly good, she finished 5th in YCS two weeks after op, and 6th in junior BBC 4 weeks after op, which wasn't bad.

In reply to stevelucocq: thanks for eveyones reply. waiting fot the op and a little more worried after reading the other thread. I will have a good chat with the surgeon before they "go in". Also I paid for the MRI scan and at £260 seems cheap. It has saved me 2 months waiting so seems worth it to me. I hope one day I will be back climbing. Thanks Steve

In reply to stevelucocq:

how old are you Steve? and how does it feel and how long ago did it tear?

I was offered surgery for the same thing but after 6-9 months with exercises (yes, that long) it got a bit better and I climb now just as badly as I did before. The surgeon (who did a very famous sportsman's knee) told me he could trim it but was not totally convinced it would be in my best interests. I am now glad I did not go under the knife.

good luck whatever you decide to do.

In reply to stonewall: Yup, I'm the same. It took around 6-9months too and it got pretty much better by itself. No more swelling and I can do rock overs just fine and go back out running okay too. Just get a wee niggle now and then and sometimes it feels like it's going to lock and I can't walk very well, but I just shoogle my knee about and it releases again.

In reply to stonewall:

hi I am 34 and i did the cartilage tear about 4 months ago. The MRI scan shows that I have a large tear in my cartilage. Also my MCL ligament flicks against what I assume is the protruding flap of cartilage. Things are not that painful but the knee does not like to be twisted. I have not been given the options of having or not having surgery. Both my consultant and physio recommend surgery is required. As previously mentioned I will speak to the surgeon before he starts removing parts of me but at the moment my knee has not got better or worst in 3 months.

Thanks steve

well im no expert but from what you say about the scan, that you are relatively young and whats being recommended, seems like thats the way to go.

good luck!

I damaged my Medial ligaments in the early 80s causing a weakness in the Ligament of the right knee, I damaged it again and again having to have fluid drained away from the knee on two occasions (Aspirated).

This is bloody painful procedure, eventually the remaining Medial meniscus was removed in 1990, so if you dont want to end up going down this road then the best advice I can give you is to give up your sports.

Of course I didnt give up my sports resulting in a bent right leg having further ruptured the Anterior Cruciate ligament (ACL).

To correct this I had to have major surgery in the Autumn of 2006 (High Tibial Osteotomy including an ACL reconstruction}....... So you have been warned,..Lol!
