The history of the world in 100 objects gave me an idea. What about the history of climbing in 100 objects. Only one suggestion each and it has to be a fairly definative list. No repeats please but you can argue the importance of certain objects(for example if somebody suggests 1980 lycra tights like the ones that appear in some of my shameful photos!!!)

I was around the BM the day before yesterday, and had a similar thought.

How about an Alpine Club Rope, with the red thread going through, that said of the owner "I'm a mountaineer"

Yep, the Buckinham (later Beale) rope should definitely be in the list.

My contributions:

The Whymper Tent
The standard Alpine clinker
The Murray ice hammer

It's either front-point crampons or the belay plate. If pushed, I'd have to say the belay plate.

Good call.

The same could be said for all the other great climbers cafes throughout the country.

Not having climbed much in Scotland, are there any good cafes north of the border in the same vein as Grindleford, Pete's eats or Eric's cafe?

This seems about the first post which actually matches the spirit of the R4 programme! The premise was to use 100 *specific* object (as opposed to classes of objects) which where not in themselves particularly significant, but around which a story revolves. Without the story, the objects were not particularly notable.

To the OP - excellent question, but not one easy to answer with one-liners, since the "story" is a key component.

Certainly the three above would be on the list. Other might be...

The Abrahams' camera(s) and how they brought mountains to the Victorians;
The frayed and broken rope from the Matterhorn incident;
Gullich's original campus board and Action Directe;
Goran Kropp's bike;
There would almost certainly be a pipe in the list, but I'm not sure which one;
A pair of Andy Pollit's lurid tights? Do they still exist?

I had been thinking of John Gill too - maybe the original b/w phto of him doing that front-arm lever. Some others:
Chouinard's back-of-the van forge
John Cleare's camera used for the Rock Climbing in Snowdonia book (or maybe Al Harris's winclepickers)
Ron Fawcett's chopped Cad bolt
Jean-Marc Bouvin's parachute
Kurt Albert's red paint pot
Pete Liveseys dental records
