I went for a plesant 12 mile run today over twmbarlwm and cwm carn mountain which took about 2:20. My Polar HRM tells me my average HR was 164, and I burned through 2,100 calories.
Map my run though says about 1500 cals.
Which would be more accurate?
I'd like to think the former as it means I can eat more.
These calorific estimates are not particularly 'realistic'- in the sense that individuals vary a lot (as opposed to HRM max where most people are reasonably close to the estimate).
Where they're useful is a means of tracking your 'expenditure' to manage training volumes.

A rule of thumb for running on level ground is:
kcal = weight (kg) x distance (km)
so 150lb x 12miles = 68kg x 19.3km = 1312 kcal
However, I don't know what you'd have to add on for the 2000' ascent
