I am looking for a 65+ litre rucksack suitable for winter mountaineering / ski touring but I want one that has one large single compartment, not a split one with zip.

Only one I have found is a Berghaus Exped, but at 85l a bit too big.

Any others?

I don't understand the mentality of 2 compartments, they just add weight and cost, and no useful function. I pack my sleeping bag and camp stuff at the bottom and it stays there until I'm in the tent / snowhole or bothy so there is no need to access the bottom of the sack during the day.

cheers

In reply to thegoatstroker: I got the ascent in that same sale. It's a great bag for the price.

I've got an Arette, can't remember if it's a 60 or 65, but just the one big compartment. Gear loops on waist strap and loops for ice axes too.

I have a POD X-Pod, it's a great sack, tough, well made and simple. It comes in three sizes from 60 to 80L depending on your back length (which saves a fair bit of weight over the adjustable length designs).
It is expensive, but I've found the build quality exceptional.

If it looks a bit on the heavy side you could also check out the black ice or thin ice from the same company.

In reply to top cat: macpac ascent is one of the best packs ever made. Mine is 12 years old and looks great still. Amazingly comfortable too

Get this:

65l +, one big compartment, lightweight and well made. My only minor issue is the top lid flops about when there's very little in the pack, but it's not meant to be a daysack!

Thanks for the input guys, theer are some good looking sacks there.

So far I'm favouring The Northface Profit and Jansport Eichorn based purely on the phots and the features that will suit ski touring (easy attachment of skis, pocket for stowing skins and ski crampons).

I have used MacPac before and like the quality. Some of the Pod sacks are tempting too, but maybe won't carry skis as well as some of the sacks.

At this rate I'll end up buying 2 sacks !

In reply to top cat: p.s. if you are an experienced ski mountaineer then please ignore this - but if not, then make sure whatever you have has clip buckles on the compression straps, otherwise stowing your skis on the side is a fiddly pain.

I know just what you mean. I got a Lowe Pro (something or other fancy name, recent design in red (good sack, crap memory!)) last year for day trips and it has metal hook / clips for that very purpose and it is a great feature.
If I need to I'll convert an non clip buckle sack, but it would be nice not to have the bother.

Fixed 'open' lower loops are good too.
