Care to share the best image that you have ever taken?

This is a Best Image suggestion and not a Top 3, 4 or what ever.

This one is still my favourite

And very nice too. Great colour, and nicely focused.

From the things I have on flickr, this http://www.flickr.com/photos/8411024@N08/3555854781/in/photostream has attracted more attention than most (though not from the flickrati, more from visitors to my office at work when I had it on the wall. It was even included in a Lab annual report once, but that's a different kettle of herrings). It's not the best image I've taken, or my favourite, but it has garnered more attention from others over the years and it does bring back memories of my first trip to Cornwall.

Joss photo belongs on the cover of a book. I really like it.
In reply to The Lemming: Well, if we're not counting properly...

There's very little about this one that makes it technically good image, spindrift sprinkling down like glitter does tend to do that. But I like it http://www.flickr.com/photos/8411024@N08/5258466486/in/photostream

And this is the only image of mine I've ever contemplated having blown up to a reasonable size, though then for the entirely non-photographic reason that it would compliment the decor in one of the rooms in the house. But it's hard to take a bad picture in Monument Valley http://www.flickr.com/photos/8411024@N08/4042689003/in/photostream

But the standard of some of the pictures posted to this thread is tremendous, and it's been a real pleasure looking through what people have put up.

I take too many photographs and have too short a memory to think about which are my best photographs ever. Some of my images I rate highest have never seen the internet.

I never take a perfect picture I always perceive there to be something wrong somewhere (usually wishing I had captured the same image on a decent camera with decent glass).

I can't put my photographs into any sort of ranking of topness, so here is a couple I like from the past 18 months:

In reply to The Lemming:

It depends massively on your intended use and what targets you'd prefer to observe. Is it for visual observing or photography? Do you want to look at bright objects (planets etc) or deep-sky objects (galaxies, nebulae).

Newtonians are good in terms of performance/price ratio, but require a lot of care and attention to keep in shape.

A good introduction to telescopes for photography is http://www.astropix.com/HTML/I_ASTROP/SCOPES.HTM

Another thing to bear in mind is that the quality of the mount is probably as important as the telescope for photography. Less so for visual observing.

Finally, if it's photography you're interested in; do you really need a telescope? One of these might be of interest

With this particular shot, I just happened to be passing, it wasn't preplanned although I was familiar with the location and had some sort of idea of where I'd need to stand to get the full bridge in the photograph.

There are two factors which make this a better photo, firstly there is a full moon - which makes the sky brighter and parts of the structure are then clearly silhouetted against the sky. Secondly the tide is out, the wet mud nicely reflects the light of the bridge without moving, water would have blurring and other unwanted (in this case) effects.

The most important thing you need is a decent steady tripod to steady and securely hold your camera, then you either need a remote control/shutter release or use the self timer in the camera, so that you are not touching the camera immediately before, during or at the end of the exposure as this will introduce shake to the image. You need some way of controlling your exposure on the camera either through preprogrammed shutter speeds (often only as low as 15 seconds) or BULB which usually allows exposures of pretty much any duration (battery permitting). Take lots of photographs and experiment a bit, get to know what your camera is capable of doing I've taken plenty of rubbish night photographs, as well as plenty of rubbish day time photographs.

The camera used to take the photograph was a Canon Ixus 860 which was running CHDK, I manually set the exposure (upto 64seconds is possible with this camera) and the use a script to fire the camera with a delay.
For information about CHDK see: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK (I'm not an expert on CHDK so anyone wanting to know more about it should look at the information available rather than ask me).

I can't remember the exposure, is was probably somewhere between 20 and 45 seconds, the Exif information on the photograph is wrong.

I only have the one photograph like this, and it wasn't the intended shot, sometimes I am quite surprised by what my camera captures as it moves around in the sky, http://www.flickr.com/photos/hamishfenton/5291039050/in/set-721576071647253...

I'm after a telescope that will let me see deep-sky stuff with the odd planet thrown in for good measure. The telescope will primarily be for viewing rather than photography, for the moment at least.
