Running tights question for women

Hello all,

Super-dumb question but please bear with me as I'm new to this...

Are some running tights better at staying up than others? Are the different brands cut for different shapes in the same way that, say, climbing trousers are?

I've got some Nike ones, found in TKMaxx for a tenner, which are reasonably great - nice and long, etc - but they're not staying up as they should, even with the drawstring tied. All a little inconvenient, I'm sure you'll agree. I've got a couple of pairs of Nike capri pant things which I've never had this problem with...

Do any particular Yorkshire running shops stock a decent selection where I could go and try a few different brands on?

In reply to Tall Clare:

Do your tights fall down all the way round your route? Do you have elastic waist and tyers?

I was training for ultra running so lived in tights and some of my tights were big after a while so I found that the only way that they would stay up is when I would start sweating. Different brands will vary in size. I like Nike and Gore. But mainly you want tights that don't chafe. I usually buy all my gear from the sweatshop, they have a good return policy if you are not sure about size.

I've got cheapo decathlon ones and more expensive salomon ones, both 3/4 length and never found a problem with them not staying up. Drawstring not even necessary.

What sort of material are they? I used to have some adidas ones which seemed to get bigger as they got warm but they were a totally different sort of material to the ones I've got now...

In reply to Tall Clare: I've got Ronhills (not tracksters -though I do have them but they *do* fall down when running and are pretty much too hot to run in) They're just 3/4 length lycra things bought from Run 4 it.

In reply to Tall Clare: No idea about women's tights (honest) but Complete Runner in Ilkley is a decent shop. SportShoes in Bradford has a fairly big selection of clothes too.

In reply to Tall Clare: I have both full length and 3/4 length Ron Hill tights and they are fine. Worth the 25 quid I think as I've had them for years.

I have Asics shorts and they're fine too.

It is quite possible that the girth of my arse prevents them from falling down.

In reply to control freak:

I thought it was the girth of my arse that was forcing mine downwards, tbh... though the 3/4 length ones are okay. Most odd.

Ebygomm - I've got some old decathlon ones kicking around so I'll try those and see if the same thing happens.

Steve John B - I'll see if I can find the place in Bradford this week.

Oddly, it might depend on what knickers you're wearing at the time? I find that some seem to encourage 'slippage' more...

OP Tall Clare 16 Oct 2011
In reply to control freak:

Er... I had some on the other day that were of the 'M&S no VPL' variety - those ones that seem to mysteriously stay up on their own without obvious elastic, and it turns out they *don't* stay up very well inside the aforementioned tights. It was a veritable crisis. I have since remedied this situation with judicious use of different pants.

In reply to Tall Clare:

Umm, I don't wear knickers under running tights.

In reply to ebygomm:

I found a G-string worked for me. The aforementioned 'tights falling down' issue suggested that wearing *something* was advisable... though I suppose a G-string is neither here nor there in that regard.

In reply to Tall Clare: Re. g-strings - I find that this can lead to chafe-age when longer distances are involved...

Craig suggests braces.

I'm hovering round the three mile mark at the moment so I think I'm safe for now, but will bear it in mind for future.

Tell him thanks

In reply to Tall Clare:

I have a pair of Salomon Trail III tights (you can get them in Sweatshop according to google) and a pair of Craft cheapies with articulated knees which are bloody great. Both are comfotable to run in the rain too (no chafing or undue sagging). Also Berghaus full length tights. None of them have fallen down.

In reply to J0:

Excellent - I'll investigate all these suggestions!

In reply to Tall Clare: lace knickers probably have better friction to keep your tights up!

In reply to Tall Clare: Having skim read this (honest) it almost seems like there might be some sort of specialist sites you might wanna try

Certainly alot more interesting than what knot shall I use to absail etc etc

Can't help with shops I'm afraid, but I find that my Ron Hills stay up fine...
