Does anyone have any idea how this is forming - if it's climable?

Cheers

In reply to Ross Mathers:

I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, but it's actually forming from water that is going through a process called freezing. See as the temperature drops below a certain point the water molecules can bond together into a lattice structure enabling the water to change it's state. We see this is the real world (as apposed to the molecular world) as an area of solid water.

Frozen water is considered climable, but only if people use specialised equipment such as ice axes and crampons. It is considered to be an extreme sport but in reality it is actually quite an enjoyable pasttime with a few hairy moments here and there.

I do hope this helps.

Theres a picture on Ron Walkers blog from a day or two before the last brief thaw and it *looked* complete then but impossible to tell how fat, can't imagine the thaw will have effected it too badly considering how brief it was and how cold it's been since. Hopefully some one can give you actual first hand info soon

I'd imagine that the minute it comes in, there will be logs on here about it.

No, in fact, about a week before it comes in, there will be logs on here about it, as people smash it up in their eagerness. It's a well climbed route in a well climbed area. When it's in, people will be all over it.

Follow the 'Winter Climbs' logbook page here:

for a reply that seems to indicate brains, you've shown a lack of by not really understanding the question, either that or you're acting the tw*t, and please don't insult people's intelligence by claiming the free bmp!

I'd hate to think every request for winter conditions would get a reply like yours! Stop being a knob!

Last Saturday, when we went past the bottom of it (we were on Aladdin's Mirror), it was definitely climbable. Quite fat in fact. We didn't see anyone on it.

In reply to Tim Chappell:
That was the week before the first logged ascent on UKC IIRC.

Loving your work mate but the serious, boring answer is that my mate Mike Vernon led it on Saturday and it is very long. He reckoned about 20m high! I remember it being about 6m in February. So good time to get on it before the build up makes it so short.

"Last" Saturday = December 10.

Not meaning to be pedantic but i always think of last saturday as the one just gone. I'd call December the 10th the saturday before last. What would you call December 17th? Sorry if I'm being dim.

Entertaining plus educational.

Only B+ 'though as you omitted to make reference to waters peculiar charateristic of achieving its maximum density at approx +4 degrees C.

The Big Man - please report to the Headteacher after school.

In reply to glaramara:
Have you done it? I ended up doing something a bit similar I think, I got a screw about 3 foot above that 3rd one in that pic intending to put another in, but ended up hitting air in the placement, and then got pumped trying to find another placement, in the end followed the if in doubt run it out philosophy as I was only 3 feet from easier ground!
 glaramara 19 Dec 2011
In reply to CurlyStevo: Nope, on the list though. Looked very chancey when me and Tim-o passed it around the 10th but your mate has very much shown its now in. Ah crap i've no excuses now not to do it.

Appologies for lack of humour on my part sir, you would feel the way i do if you were stood up on sunday, i was a bear with a sore paw.

Perhaps i'll give the headmaster a miss and head straight to nursey and her comforting paps
