Canon speedlight 580EX II

The display on my speedlight is flashing in ETTL and M modes when it is on my camera; does anyone know what this means as I cannot find out in the instructions?

The camera is a Canon 20D.

In reply to Richard Smith: have you tried the angle of the flash head? I think from memory that the display will flash, and it wont fire if the angle isn't clicked in correctly

In reply to Richard Smith: also , try going into the speedlite menu on the camera and clearing all the settings . my 580 went a bit odd and clearing everything sorted it

I have the 430EX, i know it's not the same model but if i push the zoom button then all info flashes. If i then press it again the flashing stops.

Maybe another option to check

It was flashing due to the defuse and the card that slide in and out was not quite home, I push it in fully and the display stopped flashing.
