Bethesda has been evacuated, along with farms in the Nant Ffrancon valley following the sudden eruption of Carnedd y Filiast, an extinct volcano at the end of the Glyderau. The ash plume from the eruption is expected to disrupt flights over the Easter holiday. Some dramatic pictures here:

Is there any lava in the Llanberis Pass? Me and Mrs Num Num were going there today for our Sunday lunch at Pen y Pas cafe.

I think most posters on here will be too young to remember Sans Seriffe!

That's good. Only question is will the residents notice?

Don't they drop during volcanic eruptions? Anyway get ready - Snowdon's going to go next. That burst of steam is not the Snowdon Railway...

I don't think folk realise the gravity of the situation unfolding in Bethesda, your photos are pretty conclusive. Thanks for posting.

It seems now that there is concern that the ash cloud will affect Easter holiday flights. Iceland airports will be particularly badly hit.

Oh no! What happened to that poor dog?

In most places, yes. However, the eruption has now improved the Bethesda area so much in comparison to the pre-eruption days that it is going to become a much more desirable area.

What, improved the Miami of North Wales? The Venice of Gwynedd? The Paris of the north? (etc) Hard to believe...
In reply to abseil: I know, I know. But sometimes the only way to improve on perfection is to cover it in several hundred feet of molten rock.

What?! Could my cultural anchor really be gone? Oh, how I'm going to miss those glorious endless summer days in Bethesda, wandering through the Latin Quarter chatting to the pavement artists... sipping a cappucino in a pavement cafe before catching an early evening opera... the art galleries... the museums... the old city... the cathedrals... the hanging gardens... sob...

(PS I've been at the rum to drown my grief. I blame the Lemming)
