I'm interested in hearing how other UKC photographers approach working with models , how much direction to give , how to hold hands/ arms and different posing techniques so that everything doesn't come out looking a bit samey. I haven't done loads of this type of photography but I've attached a few recent images done mostly with 1 single 580 EXii speedlite on a 2m boom and soft box

In reply to Nadir khan:

Looks good apart from the one with her (rather large looking) arm in the foreground.

Too much direction can make things complicated as they try to figure out what they should be doing. Better if you can chat to them before and they can move between poses in the style of what you're after. Depends if they've modelled before I guess.
If you need to give them direction I found it's better to pose yourself so they can see it. You might feel like a bit of a birk but it's usually better at showing what you mean.

In reply to Richard Carter: thanks for the response Richard , they're strong girls and not waifs so they're quite muscular which when the arm is pressed against the knee or the side can make it look quite large. I guess starting of with a concept of what you want is key and maybe some ideas to work with .

In reply to Nadir khan: I'd recommend David hobby's lighting video seminar. Not only is the strobist content second to none but you get to watch him direct his models on shoot. After watching him you'll never feel self conscious about directing, his patter with his subjects borders on ridiculous but it gets results.

Helped me anyway
"look like you own me, yeh hold that, hold that great" etc

Of course another useful insight is the documentary film Zoolander
