1975 - and still no other climbing film of fiction comes close after 37 years. It has everything - Clint, crumbling desert towers, real action scenes not faked in a studio and of course some reto titties.

good call .definatly worth a watch
In reply to blanchie14c: It's a real "you'll never watch a bigger pile of shite"* classic.

I was given it for Christmas a few years back and think it rather fine, in a YNWABPOS way.

I'd put Cliffhanger in second place.

I just love that film and can watch it over and over for the outright cheese factor.

First, a moment of silence please in memory of Dave Knowles-- a well-known British climber who died in an abseiling accident while helping make it.

I know this because his brother's a friend of mine.

I just watch it for the tits myself. Oh, and when he kicks the shit out out the meathead at the poolside bar, yea that too

I've just read the wiki synopsis of the film. It sounds complete bollocks.

What channel is it on again? :-0
In reply to Tim Chappell: Complete and utter. It's splendid stuff.

Respect. He assisted in leaving the climbing world a fine piece of cinematography. I hope Daves family feel proud rather than sad when the film gets repeated <as it often is>
Wasn't big Ron in it? sure I read that he was.

In reply to blanchie14c:

IIRC hasn't it got a fall scene in it which Clint insisted on doing himself rather than leaving it to a stunt man?
Tim Chappell 06 Jun 2012
In reply to blanchie14c:

Wiki doesn't mention big Ron, though that doesn't mean he wasn't, of course.

It does say Dougal thought Clint was stupid to film on such a dangerous mountain. Dougal was not wrong.

Its total horseshit in a 70's kind of funky way but it makes other climbing films look even more stupid than they already are. apart from North Wall its the only climbing film really worth watching. Clint does his own stunts inc the knife-cut at the end. I think it adds to the realism. 'among giants' is worth a watch if you can find it though <pete postlethwaite>
OP wilkie14c 06 Jun 2012
In reply to Tim Chappell:
Think I read it in Rons book. It was perhaps another film altogether or maybe even another climber altogether!

Trianga:
Yes, I believe the rope-cut scene at the end was real and clint insisted on doing it himself. Just as well really as I don't think any of the stunt doubles had to cahoonies for it!

Think I read somewhere that Clint suffered mucho in cahoonies dept as a result of doing the stunt.

In reply to Ann S: I'm not surprised, it looked a massive free fall and harness design wasn't was it is now back then. I think I'd have taped up beforehand! Ouch
 Blue Straggler 06 Jun 2012
In reply to blanchie14c:

He had more faith in the rigging than would any more experienced climber, so he paid out bucketloads more slack than he should have and just went for it! I know he has a solid climbing background but he was slightly out of his depth - totally safe, but (with utmost respect) some of the stuff was as at least as much "ignorance" as cojones.

And let's look at his character's name again. Professor Jonathan Hemlock. FFS. Second only to Arnie's "Jericho Cain" (End of Days) in the ludicrous character name stakes.

By the way it is not until 90 minutes into this 140 minute film, that you see anyone step foot on the Eiger.
The rampant homophobia spoils it somewhat.
 David Hooper 06 Jun 2012

The book by Trevanian is a fine bit of James Bondish parody, as is The LOO sanction, and Shibumi.

One of my favourite light movies, adventure, fun and a fast pace - let's not look for anything deep here. I knew people who worked on that film and they were impressed with how much of the stunts Eastwood did.
At the time of filming we arrived in Leysin to meet Bev Clark en route to the Himalayas when we heard the tragic news of the death of Dave Knowles, who we all knew. Bev left a note saying that he was replacing Dave and to take his Volkswaggen van and he would meet us in Kathmandu. He also invited us to join Clint and the crew for drinks in Grindelwald but we declined as we wanted to get going. My version is that Clint Eastwood asked me over for a drink and I stood him up !!
Years later I was skiing at Sun Valley, Idaho when I joined a small lift queue, only to be stood next to Clint and Sandra Locke - I didn't speak of course !

I thought it was, for the time, almost the opposite of racist, what with Clint's relationship with Vonetta McGee being one of the first mainstream onscreen interracial pairings. Or am I misremembering all that and was it peppered with awful dialogue about same?

In reply to blanchie14c: Casino was on the other side.

No contest I'm afraid.

it's described very well in Hamish Mcinnes's book 'Look beyond the ranges'. Clint did almost all his own climbing apparently. When it came out it was certified as AA so you had to be 14 to see it. My dad took me and tried to get me in for a half! first tits i'd seen since I was a baby.

I remember reading in one of the climbing magazines that he was wearing a Whillans harness, and after taking the fall (and suffering as you say), he shouted up "Which way does Whillans dress?" (ouch!)

In reply to Tim Chappell:

Haston was in charge of safety when Dave Knowles died, he also hadn't bother to insure any of his team. MacInnes was then brought in to manage the safety and he also made sure everyone was properly insured, but it was too late by then.
