Hi,
Does anyone know of a lighthouse stay in Wales/Scotland or North England that involves actually staying in the lighthouse itself, rather than the keepers' cottages? Ideally self catering but hotels would work too. found a few in Cornwall but it's too far for the people involved.

I've been googling a lot but mostly finding lighthouse cottages to stay in.

Many thanks for any recommendations.

In reply to control freak: not neccessarily lighthouses, but have you looked at the various towers the landmark trust have?

From The Guardian:
Claiming to be the UK's only lighthouse where you rent the whole tower and stay in round rooms, the three-bedroom Burnham High lighthouse is spread over eight floors - that's 120 steps to spectacular views across the Bristol Channel. The 1830 building comes with free broadband and the moaning ghost of a dead labourer.

· From £699 for four nights (sleeps 6); http://www.lighthouseholiday.com/

Alternatively check out the Landmark Trust who have lots of very interesting buildings that one can rent. I stayed in The West Blockhouse completely coincidentally (and that was just weird) the week before my brother did with some of his friends.

In reply to EZ: If you stay in the smaller places off peak, they've got some fantastic places for not a vast amount. School hols are a different story, mind

When to stay is very flexible as winter would be pretty exciting in a lighthouse! It's a gift for a Christmas birthday too.
Smaller is good too...

Having reminded myself of them thanks to this thread, I think I'll get the brochure again and treat my girlfriend and I.

In reply to control freak: The lighthouse on the Great Orme is a very posh Band B. Also, you have the benefit of being virtually on top of Castell-y-Gwynt

I've stayed at the Old Light on Portland many times. It is in the keepers cottages but they attach directly to the light-tower and you have access to it. Only 100 metres from the descent to the Coastguard Cliff. Not cheap though.

Not really in your specified area!

In reply to control freak: The lighthouse on Lundy can be rented from the Landmark trust. You can rent either the upstairs or the downstairs. The light is attached and you can walk to the top of the light with a bottle of beer and watch the sun go down.

In reply to control freak: we honeymooned in the old higher lighthouse on portland bill, will always be a bit special. as mentioned above it wasn't cheap even 12 years ago.
