Ok , after watching the news and people emptying their houses of water , what causes the majority of water to enter a house in floods ? New builds have solid floors so the water must only come in through the doors . Am I right ?

So doors on boats etc are water tight so can house not have them ?

I have seen some houses with what appears to be flood gates across the door frames .

And yes I am bored !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In reply to jonoh: Depending on the construction type there could be various issues.

Weep holes in cavity walls.
Incoming service ducts.
Drainage overflow and back pressure.

to name a few.

So doors is only a part of it.

In reply to Wonko The Sane: I thankyou , it's been one of those things that niggles me . I can understand older properties with wooden floors on joists , air bricks etc but not new builds .

Not building on flood plains, not covering all the earth with concrete/tarmac would be a good start.

In reply to JSA: Surely that should make spring water cheaper?

In reply to Daithi O Murchu: Could the entire ground floors not be tanked and then water tight doors be fitted. Surely from an insurance point of view it would make sense ?

In reply to Daithi O Murchu: Just do CFA piling and wait for the ground to wash away

It has quite a large carbon footprint I thought? I like the way it's ment to continue to harden, and it's handy to use, but it's very daft I think to build on flood plains and cover a lot of the ground in concete, so water can't as easily soak away, and flood places built on, erm, flood plains.

I don't like mud, it gets under my nails and into the lines in my hands.

Think folks may be missing my point. Covering every available piece of land with tarmac/concrete rather interferes with natural drainage.
