Have just spent a few days in Glencoe and Ft william doing a shoot with Alastair Mclellan and Al jnr and Kier. I haven't done loads of Mountain biking Photography so would be interested to receive feedback from those more experienced than I . i tried to capture something of the dynamic nature of the sport with panning and flash and also tried setting the riders in the broader context of the landscape where the riders play a secondary role.

On reflection, I really like this one too - it really implies motion;

In reply to Colin Henderson: you picked the 3 that i really like , the panning shot isn't perfect , the shutter speed was 1/30 so i upped it to 1/50 for the other panning shots . saying that , is till think it has feel , which is worth more than technique, I think ?

Oddly, I was standing in the queue at the cafe at Nevis Range yesterday after a good day's biking and Alistair was talking to another rider about how he'd been on a photoshoot in Glencoe etc.then I saw your post.

Sounds like your getting a bit of work mate. Good stuff and hope your well.

In reply to SeanB: Hi Sean, good to hear from you , Its a new project i'm working on for the Ft william mountain festival where I have an exhibition. bit gutted about the LPOTY but hey ho , thats the way it goes . Alastair and the lads are awesome riders and I'm really crap LOL , my first time on a downhill course . I'm back up again in August if your around ?

In reply to Nadir khan: LPOTY is just another competition, dont worry about it.Producing a quality portfolio year on year and pushing yourself to be a more rounded imagemaker is surely more important. You look to be doing this and your work is superb, so just carry on working and the rewards will come, in whatever form that may be... Im around in August before 10th and after 17th and keen to get back up to the fort to go biking/snapping/climbing/pints/coffee. give me a shout when you are planning a visit.Looking forward to seeing the project unfold if the first batch is anything to go by!

Hi Nadir, I'm a pretty poor photographer but I am a very keen mountainbiker, so I thought I'd give some feedback.

I would say your landscape shots are very good, but your action shots are perhaps a little bit old school. What I mean is the blurry, 'movement' style of shot was, in my opinion, overused a few years ago, and these days people want to see sharper shots. The best photographers still give you the sense of speed whilst keeping it pin sharp.

Have a look at this gallery and it'll maybe show you better than I can explain:

In reply to Taurig: Cool , thanks for that , appreciate the critique . we tried some of those types of shots but there wasn't enough dust to really create a sense of movement . those shots on your link are great though

In reply to Nadir khan: Its Scotland, we dont do dust, we do WATER! mud and ming..

In reply to SeanB: sweet shot , love the sharpness of the water , !/2000 sec ?
Andy Nelson 02 Aug 2012
In reply to Nadir khan: Great landscape based shots but I'd agree on the action work. IMHO is quite a 'dated' look, and potentially a little over done. Shutters of 1/100th ish should be enought to blur tyres, the rest should then, hopefully, come from the riders moving fast(!).

I think it's really interesting shooting a new sport and certainly comes with a new set of challenges. I've blogged about this here:

Might be worth 5 mins.

In reply to Andy Nelson: thanks Andy < will check it out > Its a new set of shooting challenges so appreciate the advice < catch up soon
In reply to ChrisJD:

Yep, I'd agree 100%.
