Hi there,

Can anyone help. I've been searching for a decent DJ mix to listen to. I seem to be able to find loads of quite good trance and house mixes but want something a bit harder. However putting "hard house" in a search gets all kinds of wrong results!!

I guess I'm after house that is hard rather then hard house!

I used to go to a club called Taste in Edinburgh that played awesome music, but was always too busy dancing to get involved in the tricky business of dance music sub-genres!

Would like if they were downloadable, like on Soundcloud. Any ideas?

Cheers

I used to get everything here: http://mixing.dj/

Not used it in a while though. More into trance myself but Sean Tyas and W&W are probably worth checking out.

Just did a quick search in the itunes store for 'house podcast' and it came up with a few downloadable mixes that might be up your street.
In reply to Beardyman: Podcasts from Mark Sherry, Organ Donors, Kutski and Fausto should fit the bill. =o)

These two are eclectic so you'll have to do some digging for hard stuff, but it's all good

There isn't really such a thing as "hard" house any more. Original hard house was the sort of stuff which was played by the late Tony de Vit such as the "Trade" night at The Arches in Glasgow in the 90s. "hard" house then was b*****dised into "hard house" and got faster and harder until it was no longer house that was just hard.

Without knowing specifics of the genres you prefer it is definately hard to help you choose. The main areas are house, trance, techno and electo.

You could search for electro-house which is another kind of b*****disation because electro-house always existed as its own sub genre until all this big swedish house mafia nonsense was classed as electro-house so all the old electro-house producers have swung away from the name so as not to be classed alongside the above and David Guetta and his nonsense.

I am mostly a techno fan and I suggest looking at stuff by:

Richie Hawtin
Sven Vath
BCR Boys (A friend of mine)
Clutch Slip (Other friends of mine)
Umek
Marco Carola
Chris Liebing
Magda
Audion
Dave Clarke

Exactly! I had some great Trade mixes on TDK D90 from about this era but they got eaten by my XR2i tape deck many moons ago!!

I guess the problem is that I really don't understand all the subgenres, especially as they keep getting rebranded, I used to listen to a lot of Techno (like Dave Clark and Sven Vath) but current techno all seems a bit minimal and bleak sounding for my tastes.

Thanks for the info, will check out your suggestions.

Minimal techno isn't always good for listening to on your headphones. I think a lot of it has to be enjoyed on a cracking sound system. I had never really been into Minimal until I went to I Love Techno in Belgium in 2005 and almost discovered it for the first time.

If its dance music you're after then get over to www.digitallyimported.fm
It is certain to have the flavour you're looking for.

On a side note for dance I like www.somafm.com but it isn't as wide a choice.

This will help.

And on the subject of mixes, use that resource in combination with essential mixes going back to '93 (almost exhaustive); http://soundcloud.com/das-boy/sets/essential-mix/

Good shout, there have been some great E-mixes, will trawl through these and see if I can remember which ones I was into.

I think what I'm looking for is;

Hard trance (avoiding the cheese)
House (but not too slow)
Electro-House (seems to be getting better results)
Techno (as long as it's not too bleak sounding)

I like something that has a hard edge and a deep bass driven sound but is essentially more tuneful then most techno but not cheesy Ibiza shite with maybe a touch of acid? Make sense? Thought not...!
