Just wondering how helpful a few seasons of Scottish winter would be before heading out into the Alps. Obviously the basics would be covered but are there many challenges specific to the alpine terrain other than glacial travel that might scare the balls out of me?

Cheers, Matt

In reply to mattjohnson1:

i did scottish winter mountaineering week with Plas Y Brenan befoe going to the alps

i was happy with the self arrest and walking in crampons and stuff and rope work once in alps but as far as cravasses and stuff that will be new

so it can only help

however it aint necessiarly cheap, not much more to just go to the alps and learn on some of the lower level Fs may be cheaper and get you on the road.

learn how to escape the rope system, alps is so much more of an experience, with the huts, and you wil probably find you are not as fit as you thought

PYB do beginner alps weeks as do other guiding outfits and individuals.
