I've just read about the start of Keswick MRT in 1947.
It was when Wilfred Noyce, of Everest fame, fell and broke a leg on Great Gable that an all night rescue ensued, convincing people to start a proper MRT service in 1947.
The Keswick team was once called out by a letter from the police requesting
volunteers to take the bus to Penrith the next day to search for a missing person.
Well, they had to start somewhere. (I wonder if anyone on UKC can remember
that incident)
