I might be working 4 days a week for a while, instead of 5. Lots of possibilities for the extra day - college, voluntary work, cash in hand work, sport etc.

Any suggestions? What would you do?

What do you do ? Will you be earning less ?

Is your extra day off fixed ? A longer week-end would open up all kinds of exciting possibilties !

I only work 4 days a week at the moment. I thought I might use the day more constructively - learn something new or voluntary work. In reality I find it so nice finishing thurdays thinking the weekend has landed! Most of the time its a day to do all things you need to do at the weekend (or just sit on ukc watching videos and reading posts in the forum...) so your weekends are carefree . Hope you choose to embrace the wonderful world of three day weekends!!

In reply to rob514: climb, maybe volounteer to help an instructor teach climbing. Failing that watch lots of rock climbing porn.

Boring office stuff with numbers. Should be similar income for various obscure reasons.

Day would be fixed, prob Mondays.

I'm fortunate enough to have been in this position for a couple of years as I changed to compressed working hours (5 days into 4.)
Generally, I go walking, ride my bike, do chores to free up family time on the weekend or go on a little day visit to a museum or exhibition. Sometimes, I sleep in and laze about watching TV!
It's handy as if the kids are ill or on holidays, I can juggle my day off to suit.

Enjoy it!

is this like what would jesus do but better? (sorry couldn't resist)

erm, personally. Since it probably wouldn't mean i could extend weekend trips all the time (wifey/working). I'd be sortng things out round the house, washing and then ensure a long run, bike ride, bouldering session and or gym session was had. Plus i've always got band practice on a monday, so would need to be about for that. (bank holidays nonwithstanding)

In reply to Steve John B: I have just been offered a job that is 4 days per week, I am pretty excited about it.

You should probably figure out what you would like to do with your life tho, rather than ask strangers.

Thanks for sharing your great wisdom and experience

Voluntary work twice a month, long weekend once or twice, occasional life/house maintenance stuff otherwise.

This is not a "cool" recommendation but then again I don't post on UKC to try to earn credibility points from strangers....my recommendation is to take cash in hand work wherever possible, given that you are currently accustomed to a 5-day working week. The logic being that if you earn (say) £180 on the occasional Friday and put it aside, then when you go away on holiday you have more spending money for those things that you might otherwise disregard as frivolous luxuries e.g. a tandem paraglide off the Aiguille du Midi, or that "try-dive" SCUBA experience, or bungee-jump, or just staying somewhere a bit more upmarket. Compare that to the odd day of extra puntering around on a bit of grit that you can get to easily any time.

Same as me.

I use it as my long run day for marathon training, that way I'm not taking up family time. When not training, sometimes nice to laze around without anyone else there.
