Can anybody suggest some easy routes that I could do solo for acclimatisation around zermatt or chamonix (still not sure where im heading) this september. I want an easy route that is free from glaciers and would like to spend a night in a hut at altitude. Don't have a guide book yet but will buy one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In the Zermatt valley check out the Mettelhorn, enjoyable long ascent including a permanent snowfield with some very good summit views. Summit is about 3400m.

if you choose zermatt...oberrothorn and mettlehorn are 2 good day walks getting you pretty high. both are fine solo.

If in Chamonix you could have a look at Domes de Miage, it's a long time since I was there but the walk to the hut is nice, and away from the crowds and I think you can get up the first top (Aig de Berengere or something like that) without going on snow, then if you're happy with a snowy ridge you can follow the ridge to the end and retrace your steps.
