I keep an eye on goings on in the US Rock and Ice mag ever since I won a subscription from Dave Macleod a few years back, some of it's pretty good and the photography in the magazine was amazing.
They recently had a photo comp and have just announced the winners, TBH I'm amazed by the piss poor quality of the winners.

A bit too much rubbish in the bottom right I think, a bit of cropping and it could be better.
The winner is OK but 2nd and third are rubbish IMO.

Hard to tell without seeing the photo in much larger resolution. 1-3 are all OK photos—I would be happy with them myself—not rubbish at all, but I would agree that they are of the run-of-the-mill variety, and hardly photo-competition worthy..

Exactly, for a competition that they claim had so many entries you would have thought you'd get something impressive, especially considering the quality for the photography in the published magazine.
