In reply to rwong9: Indoor is probably similar but Sydney is much better generally for outdoor within easy reach - there are actually crags within te Greater Sydney area.) From Melbourne your are talking 4 hrs+ to the decent cragging on weekends (Arapiles / Grampians / Mt Buffalo.) Mind you, if trad is your thing outdoor I would still favour Melbourne. Might be better to concentrate on where you can get work rather than where the climbing is. Neither Sydney nor Melbourne would be top of my list in that regard at the moment.
PS I'm just outside Melbourne btw.
