I'm heading out on 22nd December for 2 weeks. There is a good chance that my climbing buddy will not be joining me now so any recommendations for cheap places to stay for the loner climber looking to make friends.
I will not have a car.

I've stayed there a few times - Gary and Mel are fantastic hosts and they have a range of options from bunkhouse to camping. If you camp, you still have use of a communal kitchen and store cupboard so you can bring a load of supplies from the supermarket and eat cheap for the trip too, so it's about the cheapest way you can do El Chorro other than wild camping in the forest (which is of course illegal, but can be done http://gazleah-climbing.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/wild-camping-el-chorro.html )

There are 2 refugios at Chorro, never stayed at them though. Might be an option.

Hi Mike,

the other main spot for cheap accommodation is the finca campana http://www.fincalacampana.com/. got a good international feel and friendly place. i find it a bit noisier so prefer the olive branch. i'm out here till mid jan and tend to always travel out on my own. never had any trouble finding people to climb with. if you're stuck give me a shout.
there are a couple of refugios in the village which I don't have any details on but i'm sure you could google them. again i find them very noisy, so only go for a wee drink at them for a bit of craic.
you don't need a car once you get to chorro but there are no significant supermarkets in chorro, so it's worthwhile getting a pick-up from alora with a stop at the bigger supermarket there. Gary at the Olive branch offers this. pretty sure you don't have to be staying here to make use of the service.
from the airport you can get the train to alora for 2.20euros. get a train towards malaga and change at victoria kent.
once at the finca, everything is walking distance.

Thanks for the advice. Finalacampana has only bunk bed available. Can't decide whether to go for bunk house or just camp at olive branch. Will probably go for the camping option. Everything is fully booked up apart from the expensive options.
