In reply to Mick Ward: He was a very nice man, I met him when he presented me with my silver D of E on a visit to Sheffield and he was very friendly and pleased that I was doing Rock climbing as my pursuit, I told him that I had been interested in becoming a climber since 1953 after hearing about Everest and he seemed to be chuffed that it had influenced people like me, a working class scally from Sheffield
