I'm looking for a softshell jacket this winter and have spotted these in decathalon, anyone used them? I don't really want to be spending a £100+ if I can help it,

Thanks,
Adam
In reply to Adam Hughes: yep, used one for a while now. used it for windy summer days and as my main winter top layer when its not wet. great and worth the money
In reply to Adam Hughes: I've currently got a Quechua softshell I picked up on sale in Decathlon in Spain in 2010 for around 45euro and it is damn good.

I'm very happy with it, although I would say it is definitely wind resistant rather than completely windproof.

Great! I got one but not used in anger yet.

In reply to Enty: I've got two. The only problem I've found is the zip gets a bit stuck at the bottom. I've had it a few year though...

In reply to Adam Hughes: Yes, i have one. Had it for two years now, climbed in it, walked in it, and started using it out on my bike recently, and it performs really well. Best Jacket I have had.

Which model does everyone go for?

In reply to Adam Hughes: I was looking at the Bionnassay softshell jacket but what do people think? £45 and has a hood and hand cuffs which you can stick your thumb through.

Are there any better out there at a decent price

In reply to JUSTXMike:

I think that's the one I bought about a year ago. It's good, but the down-sides are:

- it's not totally windproof
- the hood isn't adjustable
- the hand pockets & Napoleon pocket are all too small.

For the money though, its pretty decent. Never used in anger though.

In reply to JUSTXMike:

Their site says it's only £29 just now, which is very good value.

(this is the one I have, only mine's in black)

Guess you could argue people should buy jackets without these downsides so people selling them stay in business, and there is deacent choice for people?

Not a dig at yourself, more just a thought which has occured to me.

Perhaps a fair point, but speaking personally, I didn't need the extra spec. offered by the more expensive options, so couldn't justify the increased spend. A basic cost-benefit analysis meant I went with the option which best suited my requirements and have been happy with it.

My highlighting of the down-sides was more as an aid to those who might require something 'better', eg the OP.

I've had a Bionnasay Softshell for 3 or 4 years and it is exceptional value for money. The fabric is pretty waterproof and even now rain beads up on it pretty well. The only negative is that the hood is a bit useless, no way would it go over a helmet.

I understand completely, I knew it'd come across as me making a point or a dig more than I intended it to. ()

Was more a vauge observation on buying habits and mass market products and a few other things which went unspoken/untyped...

In reply to Fraser:In my head I could hear the smaller gear companies and specialist outdoor shops grumbling I guess.

In reply to Adam Hughes:

I third/fourth the Bionnassay jacket, it's really tough and copes with the wind pretty well to my mind. I've used it in pretty strong wind (50mph+) and remained warm, and the cuffy-glovey bits are great for use with gloves.

No worries, I didn't take it as a dig.

I'd not disagree, it's old David & Goliath thing again I suppose. If I could have got the same jacket (ie the same spec. & price) from a David, I would have.

In reply to Adam Hughes:

Decathlon sell a number of different, own-brand soft shells, so it might be an idea to identify which one we're talking about...

The one linked to above claims to have a membrane, so ought be be competely windproof.

Partially-windproof items have their proponents, which is one reason why PowerShield is a popular soft shell fabric.

In reply to Adam Hughes:

Absolute shocker trying to put the thing on with wet hands.

Also when you put your hand into the left sleeve your hand goes behind the sleeve pocket pouch - not good.
