In reply to kevin stephens: I went to the Staunings Alps 20 years ago between Jul & Aug. We flew from Iceland to Mestersvig then walked to the glaciers (maybe 12 miles or so) using mining huts to sleep in. We got x-c skiing (better in last month after a big dump for 4 days), ice climbing and rock climbing. Really 'away from it all' and loads of unclimbed or rarely climbed granite. Plus there is even a guidebook.
Keith Millers report in 1976 alpine journal (
http://www.alpinejournal.org.uk/Contents/Contents_1976_files/AJ%201976%2014... ) will also give you an idea about it. and a quick google showed there are commercial expeditions going there to if you are that way inclined.
If you really want I'll dig out my old expedition report and mail it to you; if I have an electronic copy it is in WordPerfect 1.0 format on a 3.5 inch floppy
