What would you guys recommended as a wide angle zoom for a cropped sensor Canon. I am considering getting getting a 17-50 or 17-85 2.8 sigma but thought it may be better to go a bit wider.

the EF-S 15-85 would cover most of what you'd need for climbing shots, I'd have thought. I've used the earlier version (17-85) a lot, and rarely needed much wider.
