3:20 in this video, someone climbing a giant formation and the whole thing breaks away...is this real....are they okay?

Talk about an "oh crap" moment

In reply to Kemics: Seen that clip before, unsure of the consequences but pretty sure it's real !

In reply to jas wood:He has quite a long way to fall. I find myself thinking the ice crumbling might have slowed it down a bit?

I don't know how much that is wishfull thinking.

Several thousands tonnes of ice in free-fall slowing down, how does that work then?

This has been posted many times before in one form or another and others have said the climber was OK

If the ten floor fall from an ice pillar collapsing mentioned here is the same fall, it seems he was eeriously injured, but not killed. Geologically speaking it looks like the same area at least.

I dare say it'd be possible to find out on some American/Canadian climbing forums.

May I point out I did say I didn't know how much it was wishfull thinking? ()

My thinking was that by the time the bit he was attached to got to ground level, the rest of the column might have crumpled like egg boxes or card board boxes, and slowed it down a little bit.

It seems unlikely that a film made to promote ice climbing would feature somebody dying or getting seriously injured

though a quick Google suggests otherwise

Good find - well that settles it at least badly injured then!

Would have been wild if he had his other tool higher and had been left hanging by one arm to figure 4 his way up to glory

Great to know he survived. He's going to have some gold standard pub bragging rights.
