Wow, thanks. Doug was one of the truly original and interesting voices in American climbing. I used to love dropping into the AnAC site every now and then for one of his mad rants.
In reply to Damo: i only recently found out as it was a year ago. i also laughed robustly with him on supertopo, but not as mad as you think- his logic was sound..
i think he went from ice towers to floating islands in his later years..
In reply to Damo: i like this: Alaska climbers are so independent minded you can rarely find any two of them willing to climb the same hill at the same time. In fact, you can rarely find them, because they are either in the mountains climbing, or off on some other foolish adventure. To the extent that you can find them, they are not climbers. To the extent that you can understand them, they are not even adventurers.
