These any good http://www.wiggle.co.uk/panaracer-fire-xc-pro-folding-mountain-bike-tyre/
I need to replace the original tyres on my Specialized Hardrock. They are properly knackered, had the bike for about 8 years and never changed 'em yet, yes I don't ride as much as I used to.
Last time I bought tyres was over a decade ago and I bought Tioga Psycho tyres and they were awful! So thought I'd find out the opinion on these before buying them

In reply to DreadyCraig: Yes. The Conti XKing package below is worth looking at tho'.

Both of these tyres would be best for pretty fast, not too rooty or rocky x-country i.m.o.

Thanks, these alternatives are a lot cheaper too!
My local trails are very sandy fire roads and wooded singletrack. Not too rooty or rocky though

In reply to DreadyCraig: The Panaracers are good and the maxxis ignitors are widely recomended for your area (Swinley, Ash, Tunnel Hill etc) http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=51542

Those Fire XC Pros are good but the 1.8 width version is much faster.

I ride Fire XC Pro folding and think they're great - although I've seen criticism that the sidewalls aren't particularly strong, I've never managed to gash them anywhere. They're best on loose gravel and muddy stuff - I tend to ride smaller tread on drier, harder stuff.

My Sister rides Maxxis High Roller - I wanted a light tyre with low rolling resistance for her that would still give her lots of confidence.

I've also got a set of Conti Vapors, which seem good.

In reply to DreadyCraig: I guess it depends on what you are doing on the bike really, i am guessing if you got 8 years when i get 6 months out of a set of tyres then as you say not much !!

If it's just bridleways and towpaths they will be fine other than that Fire XC Pro's have been around for years and never really been updated, they have always been shocking in anything other than dry conditions, they clog easily on the back and wander alarmingly in the wet when on the front, have a look at Maxxis or Bontrager.

So I bought the Tyre and inner tube package http://www.wiggle.co.uk/continental-x-king-mtb-tyres-and-tubes-bundle/
Got them yesterday and the inner tubes have presta valves Are these just going to be a pain in the a*** if i get a puncture on the trail?? Do you need to get an adaptor to inflate them using a normal pump?

Most normal pumps have an adapter built in (Often unscrew the end, and turn around the rubber grommit)

Presta seem to be the norm these days, and means if you have a road bike, having the valve the same means you don't have to constantly faff with your pump

I don't have a decent bike pump, I have a cheap get me home pump which I carry on my bike and a footpump at home to inflate properly, the foot pump is a Schrader fitting.

In reply to DreadyCraig:

If you put tubes with presta valves on rims that are drilled for schraeder valves, there's a real chance that the inner tube will move around the rim and damage the tube at the base of the valve - where it's impossible to patch!

You can buy plastic or rubber grommets that fill up the gap and stop this happening:

In reply to TimB:
That hadn't even crossed my mind.
Might just return them and the tyres for a refund or maybe bung the inner tubes on ebay

I've used presta tubes on schraeder holed rims on my mountain bike for the last 5 years without a single puncture anywhere near the valve. I wouldn't start panicking just yet.
